Having never been in love, I will have to answer with songs that make me think of how I wish it will be like:

—Grow Old With Me (the Postal Service version…as well as Natural Anthem)
—Under Your Spell (from Once More, With Feeling)
—the end of the Finale/Reprise from Nightmare Before Christmas
“My dearest friend, if you don’t mind/ I’d like to join you by your side/Where we can gaze into the stars/ And sit together, now and forever/ For it is plain as anyone can see/ We’re simply meant to be”

I’m sure there’s more, but I can’t think of any off the top of my head…unless “When I’m 64” counts, lol.

If I get there early
will it be the right time?
our heaven is just waiting
so put your hand into mine
If I get too surly
will you take that in stride?
our boat is just there waiting
so put that little hand in mine…

@cwilbur: “Marieke” starts in French, but Brel then adds Flemish.

Ay Marieke, Marieke, je t’aimais tant
entre les tours de Bruges et Gand….

Zonder liefde warme liefde
Waait de wind de stomme wind
Zonder liefde warme liefde
Weent de zee de grijze zee
Zonder liefde warme liefde
Lijdt het licht het donk’re licht
En schuurt het zand over mijn land
Mijn platte land mijn Vlaanderland

My high school French teacher held up Brel as a model of diction—in “Les Vieux,” where he sings “bras dessus, bras dessous,” you can clearly hear the difference in the vowels, and when he sings a tongue-twister like “Vesoul,” you can hear every single consonant.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@Facade thanks for the link to that song, I have never heard it before, but you can be sure that I will be adding that to my list of faves.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@PerryDolia The Girl from Ipanema has been done by dozens of artists, including jazz and classical musicians. I have heard it a dozen times by a dozen different artists, I may have to start collecting every possible version of it, since I can never get enough of the song.

@evelyns_pet_zebra You’re welcome :)

cwilbur; Here is an astonishing version of Versoul. Brel sings, plays several instruments and there is a pause for a French lesson in grammar, vocabulary and slang; song resumes with a montage of all the towns and cities he sings about.

He was singing pretty fast except for the chorus. Luckily there were French subtitles. Without them I would have been at sea.

Les müres sont müres sur le mur. Shape mouth for saying a long “o” but articulate “e” instead. Voilà, Le “u.”

cwilbur's avatar

@gailcalled: Exactly! And even when he’s in the fast part, you can hear every vowel and every consonant!

gailcalled's avatar

@cwilbur: Try Le bistrot de Georges Brassens; he sings very slowly but uses a lot of slang and elisions.

Et La Mauvaise Réputation

I will return to Versoul when I have a minute.

When I was in Paris and I ran off with this fifteen year old girl from the south of france. We went back to my hotel room. We drank wine, got sort of frisky, and passed out. When I woke up she was doing the “butter churner” and singing some French lullaby. Don’t remember the song, but I will never forget it.

I like ^‘s choice.

But for me, it’s still this
