What makes you happiest in life?

Asked by dazedandconfused (545points) August 30th, 2009

This is my first week at college, away from home.. and everyone keeps talking about what you need to do to have a good time at college. They talk about finding your passion, and your friends, and where you fit it… Pretty much, do what makes you happy. I don’t know what makes me happy yet, and I guess I’m kind of here to find that out. So, what makes you happiest in life and how did you find it?

Cookies. They’re in the cookie aisle. :)

Other than that… finding people who like you for you.

Being with people who I love and who love me, the most important person being my husband. Being physically healthy, and without pain. Being able to express my opinion and to be taken seriously. Warm weather and sunshine. Meeting new people from places all over the globe and learning about their lives. My DVR.

My family, first and foremost. I don’t know what I’d do without them. I always knew that I loved traveling, but recently I’ve found that I really like to travel. I’ve been to some pretty incredible places (not the least of which is where I am right now), and I can’t wait to see more. The people you meet when you travel and the stories you will hear, the things you see, all of these things make me really happy to be alive and able to enjoy them.

My family is what makes me happiest. My love of animals, and finally pursuing a career with them. College gave me the chance to really find out what I liked and didn’t like. Try new things, meet new people! You will find that some things interest you and some things turn you off. It wasn’t until I was about 23 that I found that I wanted to do some of the things that make me happiest. It’s a bit scary trying new things, but do it…I have finally stepped out of my comfort zone and found that I am thankful I did! I learned a lot about myself doing this. If someone asks you to do something, like see a new band or attend a lecture, go for it…you might make a new friend and develop a new passion :) Good luck! College is great!

I never had to look far. My family made life happy for me, and it has been the same ever since. In my teens, I went through a rough time, but I think nearly everyone does.

Honestly, family. When everyone is getting along. They’re the most important thing to me. Second choice, being able to take care of myself financially (not having to rely on anyone, but, myself), and thirdly, feeling good about the way that I live my life. If I feel that I’m doing well – I’m happy.

@ABoyNamedBoobs03 Orgasms and Beer should be the title of your autobiography.

Books make me happy, my children make me happy, dancing makes me happy

To add on to what @ABoyNamedBoobs03 said, orgasms (from women, preferably), beer, and solitude.

That’s in order, too.

In college you find happiness through coming to terms with your independence. No one can “make” you go to bed, go to class, clean your room, criticize your clothing, your friends, etc. When you’re away at school, you’re entirely responsible for yourself. There is a great deal of happiness in being in control of your own life. And a great deal of responsibility as well. Being away from home can mean making friends with people who are different from, and for different reasons than you selected your high school friends.

Definately being with people you love. Whether it’s family or friends, I cherish the time I spend with them.

Family and friends. I also love video games. I never really ‘found’ family, I was born into it, but my friends are mostly from school, I have one from a old job of mine, and the rest are military members and spouses that my husband has met (and thus I have met) where we are stationed. Soooo… work and school.

I found video games because my grandparents bought my family a PlayStation.

Though to enjoy college really depends on who you are. I am more of a I’m here to learn and then start my life type, and would rather focus on that than Greek life, parties (though I’m not a partier anyways), etc. I’ll have more fun working 40 hours a week than being forced to learn fast.

You’ll automatically meet people in the cafeteria, by living in dorms, or in classes (if you’re going to a college with a good teacher to student ratio).

If you don’t know what makes you happy yet, give everything a try. Your freshman year will probably be your easiest anyway.

Being with my kids, sitting around the kitchen table and laughing and fooling around. Deosn’t happen much any more as one is in Paris and one in San Francisco but when it does, I love it.

I’m also often happy with a non-strucutred day at home – Fluthering, reading, doing some course prep, hanging out laundry…...

Hmmmmmmmmm things that make you truly happy are generally things you would do for free, and on the last day of your life…........and every day of your life!

For me it is singing/writing/reading/wildly flipping out and “dancing” alone or in good company….....sometimes just chillin’ and smoking a joint is true bliss…......it’s all relative, but happiness is pure soul energy in action. I’m sure people find true happiness raising kids, or sailing boats or ice skating just to show the variety…........let your soul fly!

Being so involved in whatever I’m doing that I forget myself. Being with friends does it. Making music does it. Exercising hard does it. In a weird way, writing, which is a very self-conscious act, can also do it.

Spending time with people I love and care about…and knowing that they are happy (and healthy) themselves. Then, there’s shopping and out of town trips…

I’m happy when I’m most at peace. I’m not very self-aware, so figuring out when I’m wholly at peace is a challenge in itself, not to mention then consciously reproducing those circumstances.

I like to triangulate towards what makes me happy from the best of current conditions. In college, for example, I dual-majored in cognitive psych and an interdisciplinary humanities major that basically let me take more of all the classes I was most enjoying. Today, if I went back to school, I’d probably pick engineering or human anatomy & physiology – because this is where I find the most interesting bits today (having spent the last decade or so exploring steps away from the prior majors).
