Why was the show Wolf Lake cancelled?

I was under the impression networks bought shows by-the-season, but Wolf Lake seemed to air for a considerably shorter amount of time than most shows. It had a great cast, good plot (think Buffy the Vampire Slayer for werewolves), and I can’t find any bad reviews. So what happened?0

If people aren’t watching it they will cancel it and replace it with something else. Networks make money by selling ads and they can charge more if people are watching them.
Also it could gave been a half season ie 13 episodes. If the networks aren’t sure they do this to give a show a chance without risking too much.
Apparently it had 9 episodes broadcast, and apparently you aren’t alone in wanting it to stay on the air. Here are comments from other viewers. The consensus seems to be that CBS debuted it at a bad time (after 9/11) and didn’t figure out who they really wanted to have watch it so it never got the “numbers” needed to make it profitable. It then went into syndication first at UPN and then at Sci-Fi Channel.
There is a petition site if you really want to tell the powers that be that you want it back. That has sometimes worked. However, I would suspect that much of the cast has moved on to other projects because it has been nine years since it was filmed.
the second answer made more sense since the show had promising reviews,
the first answer was a stupid and obvious response, which is not necessarily the case all
of the time… so i find the person who wrote it to be quite ignorant
