Why the hell are my ankles swollen...out of no where!

Asked by SundayKittens (5834points) August 31st, 2009

That’s never happened to me before…a few days ago I did an intense Zumba class, and the day before I stood quite a bit and ate a lot of salt. Am I going to die? :o

Ate a lot of salt. That’s probably the reason. I think you’d best call your doctor, though. Depending on your age and other health issues, he may want to see you. That happened to me recently, the day after (not a few days after) a big meal of Chinese food, and the doctor immediately did an EKG.

Swollen ankles can be caused by a number of things, but unless you have an underlying medical condition, eating a lot of salt will not cause your ankles to swell. Without knowing a lot more about your overall health, it is difficult to speculate. Are you also short of breath at all, or having any chest pains? Are you peeing as usual? Have a swollen abdomen as well? If not, you could probably just make sure to elevate your ankles as much as possible (i.e. put a pillow under your feet when you lie down so the ankles are higher than your heart). Of course, a quick check with your doctor wouldn’t hurt, especially if they don’t go away.

Thanks, y’all! I don’t have any other problems but recently quit taking birth control mid-pack and have raging PMS.

^ That could easily do it, depending on the type of birth control pills.

I have found that as I have gotten older eating a lot of salt can make my ankles swell, and so can drinking beer. As a result, I watch my salt intake and no longer drink beer. I also put my feet up when I can, and have increased my cardio exercise to help my circulatory system.

Some of the causes of swollen ankles (aka edema) include:

“Edema can be caused by a serious condition of the kidney, heart, liver or blood vessels, but many other factors can contribute to its onset, including:

* Eating a poor diet high in salt and carbohydrates
* Abusing laxatives
* Abusing diuretics
* Abusing drugs
* Taking birth control or hormone replacement therapy pills
* Pregnancy and PMS
* Sodium retention
* Varicose veins and history of phlebitis
* Allergic reactions
* Neuromuscular disorders
* Trauma”

As you can see birth control pills, PMS and too much salt intake are all a possible cause. If you are young this might also be a “suggestion” of things to watch as you get older and your body has less leeway on handling excess.

I often get swollen ankles when I am hot, sit for a while and eat ramen noodles (comparable to a salt lick). I think you may live to see another day.

Salt will hold moisture in your body. also, swollen ankles can be a sign of heart disease.

Go to the store and purchase and OTC water pill. this should eliminate the excess water in your body and ankles.

Nothing salty before bedtime.
