How have the California wildfires affected you?

Asked by sccrowell (3508points) August 31st, 2009 from iPhone

As the crows fly, WTF and I live less than two miles away. It has been very smokey in the mornings and heavy layer of ash can be seen on my new car. Two Canadian Super Scoopers are or have been parked at the Van Nuys airport all day, I just don’t understand why, when they are so terribly needed. Yes, I know it cost $300,0000.00 a day to operate and yes I know California has a major deficit. Whatever their reason, we have already lost Two firefighters many homes, thousands of people have been evatuated because of these fires. Why haven’t they brought out the big guns? The LA news keeps repeating that these planes came a day early, why aren’t they taking advantage of these? I am very upset about this! We have friends that live in the fire zone and that have been evacuated. I took a friend of mine home and although it was dark, I took some pictures. There were no firefighters near by, nor was I in anyones way. But I wanted Wtf to see how close the fire actually was. It was less than ¼ miles.

Yesterday I saw the one in LA, I’m not sure what it’s called but I was in the freeway and it was all red and foggy.
I live close to the Tujunga one, the only problem I have is that the big airplane that gets water is very noisy, and I’m trying to go to sleep. But the fire has also made the mountain view kind of foggy, the pieces of ash still haven’t found their way into our yard. But that’s all for now.

Luckily I’m not in LA. 2003 and 2007 are still in my memory, and they were no fun.

Not sure how the situation is up there right now, but I remember in ‘07 down here they waited so long to actually bring out the “big guns” because of the massively high heat and massively low humidity. They’d just waste their time trying to put it out, as it would just keep spreading out of their control.

The cost in the midst of our defecit certainly doesn’t help either.

Best of luck to you guys.

My dad flew from Mississippi to California to manage a fire crew and a few helicopters…. when I was young and he went for weeks at a time it affected all of us.

The air is really bad in Bakersfield. Right now I’m in Orange County and it seems the wind is keeping all the smoke North of us. I fly back to Bakersfield tomorrow in a small plane and I am sure all the yucky air will make things bumpy on descent into the pukey air.

We’re about 25 miles south of the 49er fire, and the smoke can be seen, but not felt, since it is blowing north right now.

@Tink1113, since you know the area, I used to live in Seven Hills, actually, I lived at the end of Seven Hills Drive. Never once was there a fire.
@sarcasm, Boy do I remember that. I cried a lot of tears and said even more prayers…
@Augustlan, Thanks sooo much!
@BBSDTfamily, your father has my heartfelt thanks!
@Judi, I too have family that live in Bakersfield. My daughter hasn’t said anything about the smoke, hopefully, it won’t be too bad! KCAL News and KTLA News (both local) reported that the smoke has already reached Denver Colorado. Whew… Who would have figured! The Skycrane’s are still at it. !
!!HAIL TO ALL
THE FIREFIGHTERS!!!!
As well as
The Law Enforcement!!!

@sccrowell You got lucky :)

@Tink1113, How close are you, Tujunga?

Not this year but a few back I had to move my family out of our house. We lived with our pastor for a week or so. Good times. It made us realize what things we valued the most of our material possessions.

In the NT of Australia, they do a lot of burning to deplete the fuel load just so we don’t have uncontrollable bush fires during the dry windy time. The aboriginal people have been doing it for thousands of years and now Parks has taken over with their help. Down south the “green” party won’t allow the burning of vegetation, in some areas you are not even allowed to cut down trees on your own property. The fires down there last year killed so many people and they are predicting worse conditions this year.

Why isn’t limited and controlled burning done in California?

YARNLADY's avatar

@rooeytoo At least two if not more of the fires that are burning out of control right now were originally “controlled” burns – the wind it too unpredictable and the brush is too dry.

@rooeytoo From whereabouts in Aussie land do you hail? I’ve been to Perth and a few other places in WA. From the little piece of the country I saw I loved the place.

I just saw some footage on Good Morning America. It’s unbelievable. Please be careful and safe.

@sccrowell No, I’m in Colton, I have a pretty good view of what happens in the mountains :)

Fortunately I no longer live in California, so I feel lucky, even though it hasn’t rained here in almost two years. However, a number of friends lost everything in the Berkeley Hills Fire of 1991. I also remember that when we did still live in the Bay area, when it was fire weather we would have to go outside and run the hoses on the roof. Everyone had highly flammable cedar shingle roofs in our neighborhood.

@Tink1113 As the mother of 3 girls around your age, I beg of you: Do NOT give out your location on the internet! Just worried about your safety. :)

sccrowell's avatar

@Tink1113 That was utterly thoughtless of me. I hope you will accept my apology. I wasn’t thinking. I sometime forget that this planet we live on, is not the same as when I was your age. It’s one thing for me to say that I live in Sun Valley, CA. As it is, I have given my phone number and my personal email to a friend of mine (on Fluther only) and in his PM but it wasn’t very Private. The whole world can read it. He (KMD) is missing in action. But I digress. Again, I apologize, it was very thoughtless of me.

Tink's avatar

@sccrowell Apology accepted. It’s okay, I didn’t really think anything of it. It was also thoughtless of me to post it, but it’s okay, it’s not like someone is gonna abduct a little penguin and hold her for ransom. :)

I have woken up the last two nights (in Bakersfield) with a sore throat and today I have a sinus headache. I never thought I would be hoping for rain. (I usually hate rain.)

sccrowell's avatar

Ahhh… But @Judi it is so refreshing and if I remember correctly, Bakersfield, is in dire need of some rain… Are you sure it’s due to the fire? Please take care, Flu season will be upon very soon!

Darwin's avatar

@Judi – We had the first real rain in almost two years this week, and it was then I found out my windshield wipers have been broken for who knows how long.
