What is a good word list?
I’m looking for a text file online that includes a list of English words. I would prefer to have one that does not include proper nouns or abbreviations.
The only ones I have been able to find include things like cspi, an abbreviation for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, and hwan, and other extremely obscure words. I would like to have a list of normal words.
Does anyone know where I could find this?
By the way, this would be for commercial uses.

They have alphabetical ones called dictionaries.
Try searching for a Scrabble word list.
@pdworkin :) that could possibly be the greatest answer I have ever seen
SOWPODS is the word list used for tournament scrabble.
It is also used for numerous online word games, some of which are also iphone apps.
Just for curiosity, what kind of commercial use were you referencing.
I’ve run across many that exist for the use of spammers. I didn’t know what they were at first, but someone explained them to me. If you do a Google search on some weird combination of words (such as you might try if you were Google whacking), you might hit one. You’re not, uh, a spammer, are you?
I enjoy the words I find on a charity site which also provides food for the poor. Be careful, it could be addicting.
Thanks for the input, but the problem with Scrabble lists is that they include stuff like “AAHS” and ” AALS” – the second is even an abbreviation.
Don’t worry @Jeruba , I’m using it for a word game http://robinwords.com/game
I was getting a good amount of visitors from StumbleUpon, and the only negative feedback was that some of the words were not real words from the Scrabble-type dictionary I am currently using, not SOWPODS, but similar.
So the commercial would be from the fact that it has ads on the page and that I’ll be expanding the site into some other features that would also generate revenue.
I like playing wordtwist on facebook and it uses the scrabble dictionary of sowpods, which I like to refer to as cowpads. I do not recommend it, as even virtually, it isn’t worth the paper it isn’t written on.
I suggest a wonderful dictionary called The Concise English dictionary. Get the hard copy. You’ll enjoy it. Guaranteed.
