Best covers of popular songs?
In the past I wasn’t really big on listening to cover songs, as I always figured the original song is better (silly, I know). Since listening to Yael Naim’s cover of Britney’s Spear Toxic. I’ve been wondering, what other good cover songs of popular music have I been missing? By popular music, I mean songs that most people know about.
I’m set on making a mix cd full of the best cover music for an upcoming road trip. I’m looking for songs from all genres.
Any suggestions?

And great suggestions so far, everyone. I plan to check all of these out. Keep ‘em coming.
Ryan Adam’s cover of Alice In Chains, Down in a Hole
tho I very much like both versions
See ya….Gary aka wtf
Check out Me First and the Gimme Gimmes – they do really great punk covers of all sorts of songs (classic rock, musicals, just about everything). My very favorite is their cover of The Rainbow Connection (from the album Are a Drag).
Alien Ant Farm does a pretty decent version of MJ’s Smooth Criminal. Also Matisyahu covers John Lennon’s Watching The Whells and Ziggy Marley actually improves the song Drive by the Cars.
Decent? Excuse me?
IT’S THE FLIPPING BEST.
Best? Gonna disagree with you there. Disagree hard.
After much searching I finally found what I was looking for:
Foo Fighters covers Prince – Darling Nikki
forgot about that David Bowie cover!
Also, Korn does a pretty okay cover of Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall
Probably the best cover of that song, actually.
@jamielynn2328 Bono’s I am the Walrus was the worst cover I have heard in years.
Fall Out Boys cover of MJ’s Beat It
U2’s cover of the Beatle’s Helter Skelter

@teh_kvlt_liberal,...Hey kid….where did everyone else go?
Maybe there is a better question?
Late….wtf
I think everyone moved to that thread about the 19 kids or something
Lovesong, originally by The Cure (more popularly known by the cover 311 did), redone by Snake River Conspiracy. Love it.
Also, Ituana’s cover of “Waiting In Vain”.
Cradle Of Filth’s cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name.
The Deftones covering The Chauffer.
Kidneythieves covering Crazy.
Richard Cheese doin Down With The Sickness. Hilarious.
Mm. And that’s all I can think of right now.
Oh, and Cradle Of Filth doing Mr. Crowley and Emperor’s cover of Bathory’s “A Fine Day To Die.” A bit over the top vocally, but still superior in alot of ways.
Gary Jules cover of Mad Love (Tears for Fears)
Oh, someone said that.
Dave Matthews’ cover of The Maker (Daniel Lanois)
Willie Nelsons’ cover of The Maker (Daniel Lanois)
I really like Cake’s version of Black Sabbath’s ‘War Pigs’.
oh my god, I HATE Cradle of filth’s cover of hallowed and Mr Crowley
Like my friend once said “They shouldn’t even be allowed to touch their own songs”
And Emperor’s cover was okay, I still prefer Bathory doing it. No one can top Quothorn
@teh_kvlt_liberal The Bathory version has some things over the Emperor cover. I never said it didn’t. For one, Emperor was trying too hard, and the original is alot more haunting during the solo. I prefer For All Those Who Died, though. I don’t know why. It’s just fun.
Seether’s cover of Careless Whisper. AWESOME.
How could I forget the Jimmy Cliff cover of Johnny Nash’s I Can See Clearly Now?
