How much is Fluther like Yahoo! Answers?

Is there an option to choose someone’s answer as the best one or is it that you just ask and that’s it?
How long does a question stay open for? I skimmed over the guidelines but I didn’t find my answers, unless I’m missing something.
I’m new to the site, by the way.

The question stays open forever and you can tell anyone and everyone that their answer is great. We have lots of lurve to go around.
Hi, @AshlynM. Welcome to Fluther!
As @Judi said, questions stay forever unless they are flagged – in which case they can be edited or abandoned. There’s no option of choosing just 1 “best answer’ but you can always just click a specific person’s “Great Answer” if you think he/she has given such.
I don’t really use Yahoo! Answers (and I wouldn’t tell you if I did :P). In my opinion the biggest difference is yahoo uses a ‘best answer’ feature, which shows that site is more focused on providing an absolute answer. Whereas Fluther gives you a little more room to discuss and spread the lurve.
Edit: Welcome to fluther. I’m looking forward to your next question.
I would say it is very much not like Yahoo Answers, in the sense that questions stay open forever, there is no “winner”, and discussions sometimes evolve and continue to solve problems.
Welcome to the site :)
How much is Fluther like Yahoo! Answers? No. Besides, everyone else explained it well enough.
Hang out, it’ll make itself pretty apparent soon enough.

^^Please don’t do that again.
imo It’s like Yahoo answers, but with lurve and if Mussolini ran it
Calm the fuck down it’s just a joke
Same idea, different rules.
On Fluther, people are laughing along with you.
On Yahoo! Answers, people are laughing at you.
Please don’t mention us and Yankfoo “Answers” in the same sentence. I know you’re new here, so I’ll go easy on you this time.
Questions never close, and there isn’t any competition. The kind folks who run this site actually care about what people do here and do their best to keep it civil. It’s a nice neighborhood. Look around and stay a while.
They really are completely different beasts. YA is about answering questions. Answers are short, and there is little followup. The emphasis is on getting it done. And the emphasis is on competing to be the best, insofar as other users think you are the best.
Fluther is about understanding things; looking at them from all sides; telling stories that relate to the subject. There is no competition, and indeed, criticism of comments is discouraged. Criticism of ideas is fine. Additionally, criticism of people is discouraged. It’s all about ideas here; pushing the envelope on our knowledge.
Lurve really gets you nothing, except the knowledge that some people appreciated your answers. It’s not even a good approximation of that, since a lot of people don’t even use it. Many a time I’ve gotten feedback via pm that someone really appreciated my answer, and I have zero lurve on the question. Feedback is more rewarding, because you know you’ve touched someone, and you know exactly who you touched.
We hold conversations here. We get to know each other. We want to get to know each other. A lot of what we do here is about personality. You can think of it more as a writing site than a “get it done” site. It’s more like a dinner party than a classroom. If you like to eat well, stay here. If you want to score well on tests, stick with YA.
fluther people are much more educated and literate-and more older people. Some of the answers on yahoo and the questions, too are a scream, though
**Cough** Realtime followup that no one notices. **cough**
I hate it when answers are removed before I saw what they were
You cannot post any visible follow up to the questions on Y!A and they are closed to new answers in a very short time. It is much easier to rack up points on Y!A, simply by answering a lot of questions. Here the points (lurve) are only awarded by other users, so they are an indication of how many other users are willing to click on the GA button.
Here, questions can be “answered” and discussed forever.
