Do phone companies really sell your phone numbers...?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) September 2nd, 2009

such as At and t and Verizon?

I hear that they do and that’s how these telemarketers are getting your cell phone number.

I have a fairly new Verizon phone and I’ve gotten maybe 5 calls from unknown numbers, most likely spam callers.

I’ve always wondered how these people get my number when I haven’t given it out to anyone except my family.

I’m thinking this is the only solution. Either that, or the websites saying they don’t sell or give out your info actually turn around and sell it.

Register for the no-call list if you haven’t already.

I’m not sure about American phone providers, there are companies out there that do trade in personal information of course. Also I get calls all the time directed to the previous owner of my phone number, maybe he/she got on some lists as well.
