Any advice how to clean a cell phone?

Asked by YoKoolAid (2424points) September 2nd, 2009

I must have had something oily/greasy on my hands when I was using my cell phone, and now everytime I pick it up it seems to transfer back on my hands. I tried using a wet nap, that didn’t work and then tried a dab of dish detergent on a wash cloth, but still it wont come off. If it matters, I have a samsung sync flip phone.

Rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover, applied very cautiously…perhaps with a Q-tip?

I like the rubbing alcohol idea, and definitely use a Q-tip. If you use nail polish remover, make sure it’s non-acetone. Some nail polish removers damage certain kinds of plastic.

I would never risk dish detergent and you never know WHAT is contained in wet naps different brands.

Alcohol will evaporate if it accidently goes where it shouldn’t. Gail’s suggestion of QTip is right on.

You could also try a dry product by Mr. Clean called Magic Eraser which lifts all kinds of gunk off computer keyboards and should be fine for phones.

Magic Eraser is scary, I find. What makes those coffee rings on counters or finger prints on refrigeratots disappear?

Rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball (q-tip for the tighter spaces). Just remove your battery to avoid any problems.

The Magic Eraser is a very abrasive material that basically scrapes off a very thin layer of the surface to clean the area. I wouldn’t recommend using it on any sort of electronics device.
You can use rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip like the others suggested to clean between the keys, and use a bottle of compressed air for small spaces that you can’t reach. For the screen, use a lens cleaning cloth (usually sold with glasses).
