What's a good plant for my desk at work?

Asked by squilky (84points) September 2nd, 2009

I’m looking to add a plant or two to my desk at work. What are some good plants that do well without a lot of natural light and don’t require a lot of maintenance.

Aspidistra aka Cast Iron plant. Almost unkillable.

My sister tells me that bamboo is pretty unkillable also.

My schoolkids parents used to always have them bring me Philodendrons. Almost impossible to kill. Good thing too as I really don’t have a green thumb at all.

I can’t have them now as they are toxic to cats.

Herbs are popular indoor plants…do you get any sunlight?

Mint is awesome, but it will take over other things.

Basil, oregano, chives, rosemary, catnip, lavender and lemon verbena are all good and smell yummy…but I have no idea how well they will thrive in low-light conditions.

I hope that information wasn’t too useless.

Aloe. I’ve had a plant for years and years… Watered it when I remembered, got very little light, “abused” it horribly (according to my mother), and it did ok. When she adopted it and started giving it TLC, it started to die. :D

A lot of it depends on what kind of plant caregiver you are. If you’re going to forget to water something, you need something hardy that can handle that kind of thing.

How about a cactus? (Duh, I live in, like the cactus capital of the world.)

Doesn’t need to be watered very often, and there are some very cute dwarf cacti out there.

(Old Man Cactus anyone?)

Any plant really. Something has to grow in that small amount of space. j/k

@drdoombot I hear that plant is better suited for a closet.

Bamboo plants work well. They’re resilient.
The important thing about having a plant at the desk is that you have to take a few moments out of your normal work day to take care of it.

Try a catcus. They’re pretty nice to look at, wont spill if you tip it over and doesnt need that much water (which is good for the weekend). Also they’re pretty low maintenance.

Not sure how well a cactus would do. While they don’t need alot of water, I think they need a lot of natural light in order to thrive. Are there certain cacti or succulents that do ok in low light or artificial light.

A really good-quality plastic one. That way you never have to worry about it during a long weekend and only have to wash it once a quarter.

Cacti are plants that grow in the desert. Hot, very sunny and only occasional rain..when they do flower, briefly. Real plants are good for your health, too.

a bonsai is great, and it has the feeling of the great outdoors….easy to care for too.

Hey Bonsai sounds super cool and if you have any problems, just call Mr. Miyagi.
