If the Cash Cab drops some guys off in a bad part of town and they get mugged, are the producers of the show liable?
The US version of Cash Cab takes place in New York City.
Part of the game is that if you answer three questions incorrectly, the driver will dump off the contestants right then and there.
So what if the contestants answer their third question wrong in a dangerous part of the city? If they’re booted right there and these guys get mugged, are the producers on the hook for damages?

I don’t think so, but what if the show isn’t even real? What if it’s faked?
They might be liable in Tort for neglect if the contract with the contestant does not specifically include a waiver on liability in such circumstances.
@Tink1113 Then the show wouldn’t be fun and I’d likely change the channel.
However, if this were true, that means the contestants would be employees of the show and if they got mugged under these circumstances, the producers of the show would almost certainly be liable.
@The_Compassionate_Heretic So would I.
Well of they got mugged I guess they wouldn’t cause it’s not their fault people aren’t able to answer the questions. They are supposed to accept the challenge or get out the cab, if they are up to it, it’s their responsibility. But they would most likley be mugged if the actually won money.
@Tink1113 But the only way they get paid is if they make it to their destination.
@The_Compassionate_Heretic
Yeah, I know. I was just saying that the ones that do make it to their destination are probably most likely to get robbed. Since they have money.
I’m pretty sure they have to agree to a bunch of stuff before they are allowed to play.
Anyone who’s going to be on TV has to sign a contract/waiver. I also doubt they pick up passengers going to certain neighborhoods, since it’s not a real NYC taxi, although in Manhattan a truly sketchy area is fast becoming rare anyway. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that the routes they use for this show to any destination doesn’t go anywhere near a dodgy neighborhood. Camera and mounting equipment are very expensive!
It’s edited, too, you must remember. Winners or losers, only the people who signed the waivers and played the game the way the producers want will make it onto air.
I saw on a blog the other day that there is a crew in a car that follows the contestants and picks them up after they get dropped off.
@polos Welcome to Fluther!
@YARNLADY That seems like a good possibility. Kind of a safety net for both the contestants and the producers.
Well, they do approach you ahead of time in a bar and ask questions. I assume that they have protocol like @YARNLADY saw on the blog.
@YARNLADY – That’s good to know. I could use a cash cab to pick me up right about now. :/
This sounds like the begining of a fantastic reality show!
Death Cab?
In the About Cash Cab interview, the reporter points out that the contestants do not even receive real cash. It’s fake money.
So the spontaneity is manufactured. I suppose it’s not surprising.
Disappointing though.
This totally bums me out. I love that show. Well, loved.
I was wondering about that the other day too. I was also wondering about things like pregnant women getting into the cab and getting kicked out. That, and the bad part of town thing, kind of concerned me.
@The_Compassionate_Heretic Well, what I was told by my someone who’s friend was on the show (gosh, I forget who it was…) that they were at the bar and approached and asked various questions like they ask on the show. They didn’t inform them of which show or anything, but told them that they wanted them to be on a show…and then when they leave the bar the glitzy cab pulls up so you are still sort of surprised, but not completely.
@YARNLADY Do they ever get paid? Even if they give them fake cash at the time, I assume they receive a check or something later… no?
@casheroo Too late. My Cash Cab buzz was killed about 2 hours ago.
@Likeradar They’re mailed a check after their episode airs.
The cash cab doesn’t deviate from the main strip (whatever it’s called). You can see a picture of the Empire State building near where they start at the beginning of each game. I don’t know New York at all, so I might be wrong, but I don’t think there are any bad parts along this strip, which I’m sure some well traveled person knows the name for.
