It sits and looks at itself in the mirror , a chameleon would probably form a few shades of colour .

I just tried it, he looked all around, freaked out and ran behind the mirrors

If it’s a small “room” (say, a two foot by two foot room, mirror ceiling and floor, somehow illuminated so the creature could see), he takes on the color of himself.

That is to say, nothing happens. He doesn’t magically turn reflective or anything of the sort.

@Grisaille Damn so the chameleon wont turn into a mirror , cancels my order of mirrors now then I won’t try this out now when i get my chameleon .

I think he would simply disappear, because anything that reflects all light waves cannot be seen.

He would probably sit there and wonder where his food was while remaining the exact same color. (the whole time thinking to himself “idiot humans… I’m not a freakin magician or anything..”)

He’ll be scratching his head and thinking, “hey, isn’t this that special room at the Mustang Ranch, and I must have already paid since I’m in here…....so, where is she?” See ya…Gary aka wtf

There seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding here of the anatomy, physiology and purpose of a chameleon’s so-called ability to blend in with it’s surroundings.

A lot of chameleon color display has to do with threat and territoriality. A male veiled chameleon, for example, ripples with gorgeous colors when faced with another male encroaching on its territory.

Most of the rest of the time, it’s green. Sometimes when it is out of the canopy, on, say, bark, it will turn brown. That’s about it. Sorry.

@pdworkin Thank you! I tell people all the time that chameleons don’t change color to match their environment, they change color based on their mood.

So if you put a chameleon in a room full off mirrors, it would most likely get pissed off and think its reflection was another chameleon, turn some shade of red, and attack the mirror.

I would think it wouldn’t change color, or it would change to the color of its underside.

Chameleon’s don’t blend in to camouflage with their environment; that’s a myth. They change color depending on their emotional state. For example, they turn light blue when they see a hawt female, and black when they’re pissed. Kinda like nature’s mood ring :D. So yeah, whatever the color for “HOLY SHIT!” is, I assume it would change that color.

I just put my chameleon in a box with mirrors on all sides, and it slowly disappeared!

Give it acid first, then see what happens.

How many of you own chameleons?

sandystrachan's avatar

I put off owning one a few years back , that was only due to me having to time for a new pet as i had to spend most time with my owl . Now no owl just have to wait till i move home , then look for one .

rooeytoo's avatar

@mammal – Actually I don’t have a chameleon but there are thousands of gekkos running around my house so I thought I was in the ballgame!
