Can you help me find rap artists I would like?

Asked by jaketheripper (2779points) September 4th, 2009

I know I sound terribly vague but I would like to start listening to rap but I know I don’t like anything mainstream. What I would like is some intelligent rap with substance with an arty, kind of indie feel. Nothing with autotuned choruses or anything gangsta. One album I offer as a reference is Why?‘s alopecia. Can anyone help me?

Deltron 3030.
I’m not into modern rap but Del is amazing. It’s intelligent rap that’s fun to listen to.
actually; thinking on it, it might be more hip-hop than rap but regardless you should give it a try.

If you look up the genre “backpacker rap” or “backpacker hip-hop” there might be more of the kind of music you’re looking for. But I’ll throw in Mos Def.

Atmosphere and Jedi Mind Tricks

The only rap I will listen to.

Lyrics Born! The Black Eyed Peas are fun. De La Soul. The Roots – start with Phrenology. A Tribe Called Quest, and generally anything involving Q-Tip. Nas. Outkast’s older stuff, like ATLiens and Aquemini. Notorious BIG – I like Ready to Die a lot. The Beastie Boys. The Fugees, absolutely – check out The Score. And if you like the Fugees, check out Lauryn Hill’s, Wyclef Jean’s, and Praaz’s solo stuff.

Native Guns

The Heiroglyphics, too. You might also like DJ Shadow and UNKLE, though this is moving out of strictly rap and into the wider genre of ‘hip-hop’.

http://www.okayplayer.com/ is a site that features they type of artists you are looking for – it’s great for hearing about up-and-coming artists, too.

I’ll second Mos Def, Outkast & the Beastie Boys, I’m thinking Kanye uses autotune, Eminem, 50 Cent, TuPac, Notorious BIG and Nelly might be a bit to close to gangsta, though all are good. Check out M.I.A. and Lady Sovereign for some great female rappers. And of course the most consistently socially relevant rap comes from Public Enemy.

teh_kvlt_liberal's avatar

Oh man! I can’t believe I forgot Public Enemy!

“substance with an arty, kind of indie feel?”

Some Tupac Shakur tracks.
Some Eminem tracks.
Lots of Nas tracks.
Most Wyclef Jean tracks.

And most OutKast too, I think.

A Grand Don’t Come for Free is a great ‘indie UK rap album’ by The Streets

It’s a cool album because when listened to it tells a story of one guys week but all the tracks stand up on their own. I guess you would call it a concept album of sorts.

But all the parts are bigger than the sum of their parts.

Here’s some examples

Track One

Track Four

Track Seven

Hope you buy the album, it’s a grow-er not a show-er

RareDenver's avatar

I forgot this track from the album, got a funny story about this one

Track Nine
