I never had to give a letter, I did have to follow the schools policies for withdrawal. Which meant doing it as soon as possible.

Otherwise, may I suggest you a) talk to the teacher of the course or your advisor, b) talk to the registrar’s office or the admissions office, or c) check on the website for your school for the procedure to follow.

Many colleges vary on what the process for course withdrawals is. Some only require you to drop it online before a certain date, others require the signature/permission from the professor teaching the class with a “withdrawal form”, others however, might require a letter.
