What does your computer desktop look like?

Asked by IBERnineD (7324points) September 5th, 2009

My friend and I were having a conversation the other day about people and their computers. We got to discussing desktops and the different ways people set them up. It got me wondering what are my fellow Jellies looking at every time they turn on their computer?
Do you have endless icons? Crazy backgrounds? Neat or Messy? Share a picture! I’m very interested!

Here is mine I love Robert Downey, hate too much clutter, and adore creative icons!

aprilsimnel's avatar

The desktop looks like this and the laptop looks like this.

I’ve hidden the icons and I have the Rocket Dock for Windows on my desktop with various custom icons.

Lightlyseared's avatar

The wallpaper is about 50 pictures of the “Lake District“http://www.lake-district.gov.uk/ that randomly change.

There are no icons.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

I have 2 shortcuts and the recycle bin.
I have a waterfall background from the win7 default wallpaper images.
I dont care so much what my desktop wallpaper looks like since i spend so little time looking at it .

How do I get a screenshot of my desktop? figured it out!

The background picture is of a rose because I accidently clicked something that got rid of the cool background we had…my husband usually puts up various solar system pictures. But, we just have the rose for now, and a lot of icons that I don’t even know what they do…and lots of notepads because we didn’t have Word for a while, and I’d do my homework on Notepad.
Here’s the desktop

Nothing to See Here, Folks
My actual desk

For the desktop i use johnsbackgroundswither which give me a new desktop every day, with pictures from Flickr, from subjects i chose, in a lay-out i want.
Neat.

lefteh's avatar

Here is mine. I keep it clean.

sandystrachan's avatar

Everyone on windows should use rocketdock or similar type deal to clean the desktops . My pc has just started to display fluther as a plain boring page ie all white with the texts no backgrounds >:S
this

@sandystrachan

I had the same problem on my Mac. I emptied the cache on Firefox and it started working again. If you haven’t tried that, that could work.

@lefteh

Awesome background.

scamp's avatar

Here is mine. I took this picture of my SO while we were vacationing on the Maine coast. I try to keep my desktop as clear and neat as possible.

lefteh's avatar

@DominicX Thanks! Here it is if you or anyone else wants it.

@scamp loving the old skool windows look, that’s how I keep my work PC, it helps me to realise it’s work time and not play time

I change my background pretty often, sometimes with a seasonal theme, but I’ve had this image up for weeks now. I found it when I clicked this image in a Google search on apples and, curious, scrolled on through.

In addition I have a dense clutter of icons, mostly on the left and top, and a Rainlendar personal calendar in the lower right.

DominicX's avatar

Okay, here’s mine: http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff293/Onnajanai/Screenshot2009-09-05at123345PM.png

Not too amazing, but I really like that background photo.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

I keep mine bare bones, some standard windows screensaver and background and a handful of icons:

last.fm
iTunes
firefox
ilike
amazon mp3

doggywuv's avatar

@scamp She’s 16, actually.
I watched a few episodes of Disney shows with my younger sister this summer.

Jeruba's avatar

Hey, here’s a nice one for us! It’s from the same set. I didn’t see it before.

jrpowell's avatar

Screen number one.
Screen number two.

Tink's avatar

I think of this as my “computer.”

Sarcasm's avatar

@johnpowell filter_annoying_people.user.js sounds like a boatload of fun.

jrpowell's avatar

@Sarcasm :: It is a greasemonkey script that removes users from Fluther. It only has one user in it. But I’m not sure they are even around anymore. I haven’t seen anything from them on my iPod Touch.

And it took me a minute to figure out how you saw that.

phoenyx's avatar

@johnpowell

a[href=”/users/johnpowell/”], a[href=”/users/johnpowell/”] + div.message { display: none; }

^ with the stylish plugin

(done as an exercise, not because I actually block anyone)

jrpowell's avatar

@phoenyx :: That is a hell of a lot easier than what I was doing.

Jeruba's avatar

Waitwaitwait. @phoenyx, you have a tool that would let me avoid seeing posts from certain people? while leaving everything else untouched? How do I do that? And what do you see in their place?

polos's avatar

The wallpaper features an octopus playing a grand piano at the bottom of the sea.

Sarcasm's avatar

@polos Would he happen to have a garden?

Jack79's avatar

My laptop has a picture of my daughter on a swing
My stable computer has one of the generic windows backgrounds (I don’t remember which one now). So does the one at work.

All of them are very neat, with a single column of icons on the left, shortcuts to the 2–3 programmes I use most often (IE is always one of them), plus a shortcut to “My Computer” and the Recycle Bin. If I don’t use a programme more than once a week I delete it, or at least don’t leave the shortcut on the desktop.

Grisaille's avatar

Controlled chaos.

I keep my toolbar at the bottom hidden until I mouse over it. Gives me a bit more viewing space.

Grisaille's avatar

You minimalist folks are making me look bad. Quit it.

Sarcasm's avatar

Yeah seriously, jerks. Makin me feel messy.

Tink's avatar

Atleast you guys have Mac’s, psh lucky.

Grisaille's avatar

@Sarcasm har har.

@Tink1113 We both have PCs, not macs.

Tink's avatar

@Grisaille I saw that, but the majority of them have Mac’s.

Grisaille's avatar

Oh, gotcha.

El_Cadejo's avatar

This

@polos can i see that background?

Jeruba's avatar

@Grisaille, mine would make you look good. Your icons are all in even rows. I hate that automatic grid and always turn it off, so mine are in little overlapping clusters, or spread out in special locations (like sometimes inside a feature of the background image), or crowded at one end. I know where everything is (just as on my real desktop), but to anyone else it’s a bewildering jumble. Nobody else’ opinion of my desktop concerns me in the least, so they can’t make me look bad.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

my desktop is usually the same image as my fluther avatar. It is now, as I took this photo of a goat today and it turned out awesome.

Haven’t figured out how to get a screenshot of desktop.

evegrimm's avatar

I’m on Mac OS X (tiger, not leopard) and have my dock hidden on the left hand side of my screen (it pops up when I direct my cursor over thataway). So that’s where all my apps go. (Firefox, Opera, Photoshop, Solitaire XL, Diablo 2, Post-its, Quicksilver, Pages, Preview, TextEdit, iTunes, Vienna, and Activity Monitor, as well as the trash can.)

On my desktop, there is a single column, of which I am so proud, of (a shortcut to) Documents, my knitting/crafty folder, my random images folder, school info, and a folder to put stuff on my external HD.

I don’t like settling on only one image for my background, so I have an image folder in my Documents that has ~350 images that cycle every minute.

Oh, and, I also have post-its on my desktop. Very useful.

A lot of my images come from deviantart.com. (There is some gorgeous art on there, in case you’re not familiar.)

But some come from my fangirlyness. (I didn’t make it, and can’t remember where I got it, but I adore it.)

Grisaille's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra Press the “Print Screen” button, open up an image manipulation program (Gimp, Photoshop, et al), Edit -> Paste

viola!

@Jeruba I’m the exact same way, but not with my computer desktop. I’m slightly neurotic with regards to the placement of my personal belongings, though to the outside observer it looks insane. Controlled chaos.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

okay, finally figured it out. My desktop looks like this

Jeruba's avatar

I like it, @EPZ. I like your goat picture a lot.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@Jeruba yeah, so do I, he has that mischevious look in his eye, which I can easily identify with. =)

prasad's avatar

I’m away from home now, so can’t show you my desktop. But, I’m using Vista Inspirat. This pack is really cool. It transformed the looks of my PC. That object dock is really mind blowing. This is my current desktop wallpaper: Vista Inspirat Wallpaper.

When you move mouse/cursor over the object dock, it magnifies. Also, I have activated Uber Icons. It makes all of your icons- on desltop, my computer,... magnify for a moment or two when you double click on it.

Any Mac users here? Some say that object dock is like a bar at the bottom in Mac. I haven’t seen Mac until now.

evegrimm's avatar

@prasad, Is this what you’re talking about? (That’s a Mac, with my dock on the LH side of the screen.)

prasad's avatar

@evegrimm Yeah, the icons on the bar (object dock on top) magnifies just like that when you move your cursor over them. And, my friend has seen Mac, he says it’s really amazing, but hard to operate than Windows. He says icons bounce when double clicked. With Uber Icons in Vista Inspirat, icons enlarge for a moment or two.
And, in the object dock, when clicked icons glow twice.

One more thing, there is something called YZ shadows. With this shadows appear below three sides (excluding top side) of any active window.
I don’t know much about YZ toolbar. With that desktop wallpaper got folded, but the effect was nice one.

I should also warn you about Vista Inspirat. I’m using AVG antivirus and it removed 4 system files when I scanned whole computer. I had to reformat my PC. Later, I installed Vista Inspirat with un-checking the check box of system files…now, icons are not of vista but XP. But, other effects are there, only icons (icons on object dock are still of Vista style).

prasad's avatar

I have Windows XP and installed Vista Inspirat 1.1 on it. Below are some snaps.

1. My old desktop before formatting and with vista rainbar

2. Object dock on top

3. My Current Desktop

I have uploaded all snaps I had taken from Crystal XP, Longhorn Inspirat, Vista Inspirat Ultimate, Crystal Clear and Modified Longhorn Inspirat (i.e. Vista Inspirat 1.1 which currently I’m using) and all the wallpapers from all these Brico Packs.
