Why would someone's Facebook account be deleted?

Asked by jbfletcherfan (13212points) September 5th, 2009

I got an email from a friend last night saying that his Facebook account has been deleted. He has no idea why. He’s asked me to try to find out what happened. He’s a sweet guy & I can’t get a handle on why this happened. He was never abusive on there. Anyone have any ideas? Or how I could find out?

There have been a lot of Facebook accounts deleted lately. The majority of them are because of too many posts or too many updates and posting too much on the news feed. Facebook says that these users are constantly bothering other users/their friends with lots of updates. I don’t agree with this.

@bvdshec17 I’ve not heard anything about that, do you have a link?
I read of a lady’s account that was deleted because they thought it was a fake account. I can’t find the link to the article..

@casheroo I don’t have one… It came in the most known Portuguese magazine, also talking about a group that was created by several users to stand up against these incidents and asking Facebook to “return them” their friend back, who had his account deleted by Facebook.

There’s the “spam” aspect. Both with adding lots of friends (mostly for applications for FB sees the potential for advertising abuse) and with constantly posting and filling up people’s feeds with their games and status updates. You tend to get warnings, especially if you’re adding “too many friends” too fast.

@jbfletcherfan Anyone I know?

Ah. Mafia Wars probably got him. That particular person added lots of people through MW “pimping” groups. He was supposed to get a little pink note and a “suspension” before being deleted though.

Hmmmm. Well, I’m going to stop posting so much stuff that I do. Mine’s mostly Vampire Wars stuff.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

See, I blocked all MW stuff, so I don’t know what people are doing with that app.

If you added 100 “clan” members, random people who also play Vampire Wars, in a pretty short period you’d probably get a warning. Its weird that they skipped this step with this guy, but its probably the reason.

more and more people are being stalked by others who use Facebook and other net resources to gather information on you. young people are beginning to understand that they are giving way too much personal info away. read the fine print in the user agreements as some sites keep your info forever and or share it. eventually as you grow and change everything you have ever posted could come back to haunt you especially in a court case.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@sparklefag Yeah, I’ve seen people tell way too much. Personally, don’t get carried away with it. I just have fun with it.

avvooooooo's avatar

@sparklefag FYI, many “young people” know that they need to limit the information they put on social networking sites in the first place and further restrict the information available through privacy settings. There are more than enough people getting screwed over through facebook pictures that people are becoming more aware of what’s posted.

They’re not a social evil and many, many people are getting wise about using them. “Young people” are more likely to know how to restrict access to information than older people who use these sites.

if they did they wouldn’t put any info on these sites in the first place. your naive to think that data farming is limited by limiting your offered information. a complete psych profile can be created just by how you defensively responded. you just don’t want to face the fact that these sites are not really free social networking platforms with altruistic intentions. nothings free. they sell you every second of the day, it’s a business ( there’s a reason Rupert Murdoch bought Myspace ). it’s the same genius that gets you to pay to wear companies logo t-shirts or hats so that your paying them for the privilege to advertise for them. I was trying to gently suggest to jbfletcherfan that he may want to think of the other aspects while he was on the subject. if your really interested in what goes on behind these sites and have the stomach for it do some research.

I have read that some people are putting an automated signal on their copyrighted pictures and other items that willl notify your server that you have violated their copyright and your account will be shut down that way.

avvooooooo's avatar

@sparklefag Paranoid any?

p.s. JB is female.

@YARNLADY If copyrighted material is identified by the owner, its removed. Not the account.

YARNLADY's avatar

@avvooooooo It think it was cited as a violation of the terms of service in the article, which would cause the account to be deleted.

avvooooooo's avatar

@YARNLADY I can pretty much guarantee that this individual did not have copyrighted material.

Policy, in the 5 years I have been on Facebook, is to remove the material and possibly send the poster a warning. Not removing the account.

Not sure if this has been said yet, but posting nude pictures in your albums.
This was actually more of a problem that myspace was having long ago.
I’m sure it’s happened a few times on Facebook.
Not saying this is what your friend did, but it’s a possibility for so many others.
Btw, did you ever find out?

avvooooooo's avatar

@Vunessuh We didn’t ever find out why @jbfletcherfan and my mutual friend had his account deleted. But there was nothing more to it than playing mafia wars and adding too many people to his mafia, we think. Nothing wrong at all. :P

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Vunessuh Avooooo’s right. It was the too many friends thing. But I talk to him via email, so thankfully, we still stay in touch. Just talked with him yesterday several times, in fact.

Vunessuh's avatar

Too many friends on his Facebook? Or too many friends on mafia wars? Either one isn’t a legit excuse for having your account deleted. That’s just stoopid.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Vunessuh Too many on his MW, the way I get it. :-(
