Do I need to purchase the family pack of Snow Leopard or can I just purchase the single like with Leopard?

Asked by willbrawn (6619points) September 6th, 2009

I own two MacBooks, when Leopard came out I purchased the single user and was able to load it on three computers. Can I do the same with Snow Leopard or does it have serials with it this time?

The disk that you get with the family pack is the same as the disk you get in the single user pack, the only difference is the terms of the EULA. So yes you could just user the single user disk over and over again but you would be violating the terms of the EULA. Whether or not you feel stealing software is apropraite is, I’m afraid, a moral decision that you will have to make by yourself. Apple has done the decent thing and treated you like an adult by not including any annoying online activation and charging a reasonable amount, and are expecting their customers to do the decent thing and pay for their software.

@Lightlyseared – I forget though. Aren’t you allowed to install the system on up to two computers if your not using them at the same time?

You can install a single user on both by the way. I did because I only use one at a time.

@Bri_L For $29 upgrade disc the exact words of the EULA are ” install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-branded computer as long as that computer has a properly licensed copy of Mac OS X Leopard already installed on it”

Where as for the $169 package the terms are “install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-branded computer at a time”

The second one may be taken as saying you could use it on 2 computers as long as you don’t use them at the same time. However if you look they include the term install. Even if you are not using both computers at the same time the software is installed on more than one (Apple branded) computer at a time.

While I think everyone should be able to make their own mid up on this, I personally would pay the extra $20. A lot of the time software is ridiculously expensive (just look at MS and windows 7, for example) Apple has been quite reasonable over the price and I think it would be a good idea to encourage them to keep doing that.

@Lightlyseared – Ah I see. I thought that because I had two unique copies of leopard the upgrade could be purchased only once.
