What are the pros and cons of widescale telecommuting?

Asked by The_Compassionate_Heretic (14634points) September 6th, 2009

Telecommuting = working from home.

Some advantages might be that companies would spend less on office space and traffic on the roads would decrease.

Some disadvantages would include people slacking at home instead of working and I.T support would become more difficult ultimately resulting in more downtime.

I think the term ‘telecommuting’ is clever.

Same for ‘No Collar Worker’.

I’m irked to see ‘telecommuting’ being replaced with the less clever ‘teleworking’ just because some might not be bright enough to grasp the former.

Merits: reduced traffic, less pollution, saved energy, working at any convenient time
Demerits: fewer opportunities to socialize, isolation

Selfish pros; No need to shave legs, can wear pjs and flamingo slippers all day long…

I have found an interesting post on this productivity blog:

http://blog.dutyful.com/four-excuses-for-not-implementing-telecommuting/

The author essentially reduces telecommuting sustainability to 4 main stereotypes:

- If I can’t see you I can’t tell if you are working.

- I won’t be able to call a meeting if most of the group is telecommuting.

- There’s no budget for equipment and services.

- Workers who shouldn’t be allowed to telecommute will want to.
