As this site agrees:
“Tipping your cab driver is customary in New York, but not mandatory. However, if you got to your destination safe and sound, be kind and give your driver a 10, 15 or 20 percent tip, depending on how good you felt the level of service was.”
However, if you don’t tip him he might run over your foot.
I remember a time when I tipped a driver 20% on a business-related trip and my boss was furious. I offered to cover the tip out of my own pocket, but he refused and said he would cover it that one time. Then he warned me never to do that again.
After that, I kept tipping drivers around 15%-20%, but I stopped mentioning it to my boss.
I have been in NYC plenty of times. The annual rate of a tip we give is always about 3 or 4 dollars. We only drive for like 10 to 15 minutes though.
I’m not as good about tipping cabbies as I am about tipping at restaurants. I wanna pay and get the hell out of there to get where I’m going and so the cabby can get another passenger, so I don’t have the time to get my crappy math skills going. If I’m paying with cash, I give them a ten and tell them to keep the change. I think I’ve had to pay more than $10 for a cab ride maybe twice in my life, and then I give them fifteen. If I’m paying with credit, when the tip screen comes up, I just tap for $2.
Tip between $2 – $5 dollars, depending on the length of the trip and how good the drive was. Not tipping is completely inappropriate unless your cabbie hit someone (in which case, you shouldn’t pay them at all), or stopped to argue with another driver.
