What can be used to bring down the swelling from poison ivy?

Asked by SierraGirl (199points) September 7th, 2009 from iPhone

What can be used for poison ivy? My nephew got poison ivy on his arms and legs but also by his eyes. All around his eye is swollen. Any idea on anything he can take to bring the swelling down?

Severe cases of poison ivy can be treated (by a doctor) with steroids – that’s about the only thing that affects the swelling.

Topical applications can help with the itch and can contain drying agents to speed the process, but I wouldn’t be comfortable putting any of those in the area of the eyes.

Go to a pediatrician. She may prescribe pills to take such as prednisone, or topical ointments or liquids such as triamcinolone acetonide if the itching and swelling is bad enough. The most powerful type is called clobetasol, but it’s unlikely you’ll need to go to that level. These medicines are types of corticosteroids.

Oatmeal baths can provide transient relief.

Thanks everyone. My sister in law finally decided to call the doctor and he called in a prescription
