Is not getting tattoos becoming the new trend?

Asked by The_Compassionate_Heretic (14634points) September 8th, 2009

The younger crowds tend to lean towards all things “anti”.
Now that tattoos are completely mainstream, will it be über cool not to have any?

Nah I’d still think I want one

Lol, funny thought. I myself love skin art, but have never been one to follow a “fad.” Who knows? Look at the style of jeans since the 50s. Tight > Bell > Disco (tight bell type) > ripped torn tight > baggy > now all is popular. You just never know anymore what’s to be “cool” or “not cool.”

I doubt it. Not because I personally have lots of ink, but because every high school student I run into still talks about how they’re going to go to the shop on the day they turn 18 to get some kind of tattoo. Or maybe I just surround myself with certain people….

Yeah . . . now that all things underground have come aboveground, how can anyone be all hip and edgy??

One can only hope.

When I turn 18 I want to get an eagle ripping off some guy’s face on my back
Or the cover of the number of the beast

It always was and still is uber cool to have no tatoos.

There will always be those who want ink, and those who don’t. The majority of the people who I know of who do not want ink refrain from doing so, not because it’s a trendy thing to do, but because they just like their skin the way it is. More power to them. Personally, I love seeing beautiful works of art on skin.

Speaking of mainstream, there is a tattoo shop in my local mall. It completely weirded me out for a second.

I think one of the most important things you can learn is to make decisions for yourself, independent of what others think. It’s a tough thing to do sometimes but when someone does what they believe in—in the face of peer pressure—I have a huge respect for them.

I sure hope so.

Everything old is new again. Peace, dudes.

I guess if I sit still long enough I will become supremely cool by virtue of all the things I am not doing.

I have to go with the “I sure hope so” crowd because I don’t like tattoos and I’m more attracted to people without them.

But I mean, out of all of my friends that I’ve hung out with over the years, I’ve only known one of them to have a tattoo and she just got it. I don’t think it’s quite as mainstream as you think. It’s mainstream among the “hipster” crowd (at least for teens), but other than that, not really.

As an artist I enjoy the human form, but tattoos make it hard to see that form. They are rather like static on the radio or snow on a television screen. I prefer my art on the wall.

sjmc1989's avatar

Yeah probably because I just got one this year and nothing I do is ever considered cool. I so sad :(

tinyfaery's avatar

Depends on the location, I suspect. I worked with teens for a lot of years and they were all interested in getting tattoos.

SeventhSense's avatar

I hope so. There’s going to be a lot of really strange looking old folks someday.

perplexism's avatar

@SeventhSense I like to say more ‘interesting’ looking.

perplexism's avatar

@SeventhSense Interesting, indeed.

five99one's avatar

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m 18 and I want to get a tattoo. I think it’s just a personal choice.

jonsblond's avatar

@SeventhSense The white hair on the shoulders makes me shiver more than the tattoos. I wonder what his back looks like?

<shiver>

i don’t think tattoos are as “mainstream” as you suggest.

even though more and more people have ONE in a generally HIDDEN area, most people do not have multiple tattoos in visible areas.

and they are still a road block to many jobs (which i personally think is fucking stupid and shitty)

SheWasAll_'s avatar

@alive While some people will disagree with your last statement, I completely do agree. It’s judgmental and stupid. Just because I have tattoos doesn’t change who I am as a person.

@sjmc1989 Loved that answer.

If i ever take one, it’s gonna be this.

El_Cadejo's avatar

Who gives a shit if its popular or not. That shouldnt be why your getting a tattoo in the first place. It should be something for you, not some stupid ass trend your following.

SierraNichole's avatar

i could really car less about whether or not getting or not getting tattoos is trendy or whatever. i have two going on three and i get them for deep personal reasons. people can’t even see them when i have all my clothes on bu ti have them and i love them.
people can do what they wish with their skin. some of it is beautiful and some of it is complete waste of ink. but whatever. i’m done ranting.
yes its “trendy” and “hip” right now but i’m sure less people will start getting them.

Jeruba's avatar

@rebbel, if you do, better carry a crib sheet so the tattoo artist doesn’t misspell “tattoo.”

rebbel's avatar

@Jeruba You know, i actually didn’t see that, now that i searched for that photo again.
Some years ago i saw that picture for the first time and then i did some searching on the right spelling.
I forgot it.
I would look like a dumb ass, for sure, with it spelled wrong…
Thanks for pointing it out!

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

I think so and that’s okay too. I’m am ever surprised when I meet someone who doesn’t have tattoos or piercings, I like it.
