What was your favorite art assignment and why?
I’m trying to keep myself grounded in the teenage mind when planning lessons for my class…so I wanna know…what were the most memorable art lessons you’ve had? Which ones did you hate?
I’m trying not to get sucked into making them do mundane, old-school things that don’t really teach them much.

Perspective art was my favorite I would have to say. Taking pictures, billboards, magazine photos, and changing the meaning of them with different mediums and mosaic styles. Very tough, but it got me thinking about how I view things.
I had a great teacher too, she had LOADS of magazines. National Geographic, Vogue, Popular Science, arts and crafts, etc. The magazines were chopped up because all of the students would be cutting pictures out of them to draw. It was interesting to see so many things cut out of the magazines.
Back when America has the best schools in the world I had an art class in jr high that was a jewlrey making class. I liked the knot ring I made with silver wire and solder. We had great jewlrey making tools in that class. It was in the ‘70’s so we also made a lot of fun jewlrey with leather. We had cool leather stamps and paints.
Least favorite of the creative art classes was spinning and weaving, though I did make yarn from my dogs hair!
When I taught a world cultures class (sort of a social studies/humanities elective) at the jr. high, we did traditional Adire (Nigerian dye techniques). It’s similar to batik, only you use a flour-based paste instead of a wax. I bought cheap sheets from K-mart and then cut them up to use for the fabric. The kids seemed to enjoy it, and it was something none of them had ever done before. It’s also pretty cheap (in case you have to buy your own supplies). Good luck.
be warned, it smells a little while things are drying
Figure drawing from life. Having an opportunity to really look at a person. Most of the time, it’s considered rude. But she wasn’t naked. Sigh.
anything that requires creativity
I hated art in school. I am now a registered Native American Artist, but what I hated the most was that the teacher would grade us on our art. Students were encouraged to say what they liked or didn’t like about our work, and the “critiques” went entirely along the popularity lines, and had nothing to do with art.
It was not the greatest one, but it stayed with me for some 30+ years.
When i was about 10 years old we had to make a batik.
It didn’t turned out to be a nice looking one like that you can see on that Wiki-page.
It looked more like a used handkerchief.
That’s why, i think, my little girlfriend was not that impressed when i gifted it to her…
I LOVE ART!! I am actually about to reignite my career in Graphic Design….so yeah can’t get enough of it….My favourite art assignment (probably because I one a State award for it) was in Grade 12 (I’m Aussie) we were told we could have any size (with in reason) blank canvas and paint whatever our hearts desires using paint, mixed media etc…when I was doing visual art life drawing was pretty awesome as well….the worst I think was mostly theory stuff like writing an essay on stuff that pretty much has been essayed out….I would’ve loved to have been an art teacher if I didn’t do graphic design. I think doing an essay about which artist (not alive) you would love to spend a day with. If you had a choice to rehang artwork in the Louvre what would have and what would you take away. Maybe even get a little suggestion box happening….ask your students about ideas for essays or what aspect of art they would like to learn about and maybe go with a suggestion from there….ahhh batik I can still smell the melting wax!
