Who are your heroes?

Asked by Insomnia (347points) September 10th, 2009

My personal heroes are everyday people- especially educators and social workers. It seems that many of the heroic figures of history were just normal people who were put into extraordinary situations and faired well.

So do you have any heroes?
What are the requirements for someone to be considered a hero?
Do you think the men and women in the armed forces should be considered heroes?

Any more banter on this topic welcome.

And no, this has nothing to do with the show :P

Cold beer is optional.

People who overcome great odds while remaining capable of smiles and laughter, and showing courage and perseverance. Two I can think of right now include Dawrin and cak.

Thoreau, King, Tolstoy, Gandhi. http://thoreau.eserver.org/ is a really good website. I recently read “Life Without Principle” again…always a good read.

I see no value in the idea of heroes. No one is perfect. We are all human. I admire many people, but I do not have heroes.

My heroes as a child were Superman, Hulk Hogan and Michael Jackson. The first died (at the hands of Doomsday AND due to complications from falling off a horse). The second was defeated by Yokozuna and then got divorced. The third died because of a drug habit and negligence by his personal doctor.

As far as I can tell, my childhood is over.

I admire those who live life with terminal illness, with extreme disability, with extremely unfortunate circumstances and still smile and laugh and enjoy life.

@tinyfaery

I respect your position and obviously I realize that no one is perfect but I believe some people have done (and continue to do) things which can serve as an example to others.

As a contrast, many people have done (and continue to do things) which serve as an example of what not to do.

The way in which an individual classifies people into these two groups is, of course, relative and dependent upon their view point. Hero was just my arbitrary term for an exceptional individual belonging to the first of these two categories.

I don’t agree, but I don’t have to. An exception in one case is the rule in another.

@ChazMaz, props for the crunchy pickle!

But seriously, my heroes are the teachers who make me think or teach me something that I couldn’t learn before.

My most favorite teacher was someone I had during HS who taught us (the class) what great literature was, how to evaluate it, how to differentiate between fiction and literature…and she showed both Dead Poet’s Society and Harold and Maude. She was also the first teacher to mention Ayn Rand, which was great because it was something different.

Also, I will always look up to her for introducing me to the love that is J. Alfred Prufrock and Eliot.

And Batman, of course.

Jesus.
Heck, everyone else has flaws. So, if you ever look up to someone as a hero, they will eventually let you down because they are only human.
& To me a hero isn’t someone that would let you down.
