Do you work from home?

Asked by unit (311points) September 11th, 2009

If you do, do you enjoy it , or do you miss the office banter.

One day every other week or so.

I work from home and have for the past 9 years. I love the flexibility that I have. i wouldn’t trade that for anything. But I am a social person, so I definitely miss the banter. However, I get paid by what I produce so, that didn’t work out so well for me when I worked with others. I spent too much time talking!

There are downsides – like no one thinks you’re working because you are at home. They think nothing of barging in the office and telling me stupid stuff (‘I think the cheese is moldy’) or that I’m always available to pick something up or drive someone somewhere. You have to be really disciplined to work at home. I have a schedule and I adhere to it. It does grate on me that I always seem to be ‘at work’, but there are many more pros than cons in the end. And when I go on vacation – it’s fantastic!

I don’t, but my mom has for the past few years. She told me that all of the office antics kind of bothered her, so working from home was a great move.
I think it’s cause she loved to hear me blasting my music and killing people in Call of Duty.

I believe I’m most productive in a dedicated office space with all of the accoutrements I might need right at hand.

At home, I don’t have that. I can get the work done, but must make little compromises in workflow all along the way.

Can imagine you have to be very focussed on what you are doing rather than getting tempted to turn on the TV , let friends pop in etc

I love it I found all the office scuttlebutt depressing but people know I’m busy and still keep calling me to chat…..it’s harder to stay motivated when it’s just you alone on a computer

I like working from home, but have found that I miss the people contact much more than I thought I would.

I make an effort to have lunch with folks that I know and get out during the week.

I love working from home because I do not miss office politics at all. I also enjoy the freedom I have to take my husband to the doctor, attend school events, and so on. I have made sure that I have everything I need to work efficiently from home. I don’t even have to wait in line for the copier only to discover it has run out of paper.
