If you did not live in the US (or EU or Great Britain) how did the events of 9/11/2001 affect you?

Asked by Strauss (23835points) September 11th, 2009

I have experienced, heard and read a lot about how we in the west were affected by the events that occurred on September 11, 2001. I have been wondering how these events, and the events that followed (invasions of Afghanistan, Iran, or other events) may have affected others in the world.

I used to think my government only killed the other team.

I had to drive 2,600 miles round trip for a wedding, and got to buy low with my brand new 401(k).

oh, and now I have to deal with a bunch of TSA bullshit when I fly.

They did not affect me directly except that I had a friend on a flight to JFK that day and we were worried about him for a few hours, but found out he was not in any of those planes.

However as a frequent traveller they affected me a lot, since security became ridiculously strict after that. Especially when travelling with my baby daughter and not being allowed to take her milk on the plane (or juice later on), or always having to throw away my bottle of water, not to mention the endless queues to be searched, having to take off my belt and shoes (as well as the usual keys and coins) and all the inconvenience that goes on to this day. As if this will ever stop a terrorist. All they have to do is get a job as a toilet cleaner at the airport and have easy access to areas no passenger will ever visit. It drives me nuts everytime I have to travel (including just this morning) and has been one of the reasons I prefer to drive whenever I can, even if it’s a 2000-mile journey.

Most of us Swedes were angry and upset by the revenge wars that followed. It was the wrong way to deal with the situation.

I always wondered, and still do, why the atrocity was not initially treated as a criminal matter. Up to now, the co-conspirators in the US have never been identified, or, at any rate, never been arrested – a project on this scale must have involved very many people living and working in the US. Further, why the rush to judgment and demand the hand over of Bin Laden? Surely the legal route should have been tried: forensic and other investigations come up with evidence that can go before a court; then the process of demanding an extradition can begin. These questions have never been answered to my satisfaction.

I don’t know of any country which wasn’t affected. Maybe some tribes in the Amazon didn’t get the news.

@bea2345 couldn’t agree more. Elected officials are always seemingly harder to prosecute, they’re a little too high up on the chain.
