Remember this song (see details--it's more than you think)

Asked by Strauss (23835points) September 11th, 2009

In the late 60’s Kenny Rogers (then with the First Edition) had a hit with “Ruby (Don’t Take Your Love to Town)”. There was another song, sounded like Ruby’s answer. I heard it one night on the radio, but have never heard it since. It has the same melody, but the lyrics are Ruby’s reply that she has to go to town, to earn money to pay for Billy’s medical expenses. Have you ever heard this song?

“Billy, I’ve Got to Go to Town”—Geraldine Stevens

I do remember hearing this ages ago (it’s from 1969), but it doesn’t seem to have had much of a life. As a sidenote, she also did an answer song to Elvis’ “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”: yep, you guessed it “Yes, I’m Lonesome Tonight”.

When I googled Geraldine Stevens, I came across an album series called And The Answer Is: It mentions such greats as “Queen of the House” in answer to Roger Miller’s “King of the Road”. One such pair I remember, but don’t see there is tha Tammy Wynette classic “Stand By Your Man”, answered by (I believe it was) George Jones ”(I’m A) Stand By My Woman Man”.

I remember “He’ll have to go“by George Jones and the response song “He’ll have to stay” by Jeanne Black, both from 1960
