What is long-grain leather?

It is used in some older furniture and car upholstry.

I know this is an old question, @kelly, but since it didn’t get answered I thought I’d chime in
“Long-grain” is a particular texture that is embossed onto leather. It’s a pattern of slightly wavy, loosely parallel ridges. Here’s a picture, though not a great one.
