Is a wireless phone carrier liable if a customer is in a life threatening situation, where a phone call could save their life, but the victim can't get a signal?
Say you’re stranded in a remote area and need to call for help but service isn’t available. Could your carrier be responsible for not providing adequate coverage?

This sounds like a question for students in law school. I am not one of those, lol. Somehow it sounds like it would hold up in court though. I mean, since people can sue for coffee being too hot, why not for this?
Nope. Read the pages of your contract. It is like the EULA for software.
No, I doubt it. The only time I could see it holding up in court is if a customer paid for a roaming package, knowing full well ahead of time that their regular coverage may not extend to certain areas. Cell phones are not ideal for calling 911, never have been, probably never will be.
You are aware that by asking this, you are now a part of the problem.
It’s probably one of those things that somebody will sue for sometime soon, and win, and everyone will think it is ridiculous and unjustified, but the person will still get a load of money.
No. Cell phone service is not a public utility. Too many variables affect cell phone reception, including sunspots.
I don’t know. It depends on whether the company advertises saying that you can have serviec anywhere. They might be liable for false advertising if this is the case.
Not so much. You willingly purchase a cell phone and plan and the contracts let you know that service isn’t going to be available everywhere. I’m guessing that if the contracts said, “Yes, service is available EVERYWHERE,” then you might have a case, but not likely. This reminds me of the lady that came into my store when I worked for AT&T and threatened to sue the company if her daughter was in a car accident and didn’t have her cell phone on her because it messed up and she had to wait one day for a warranty replacement. Apparently her Porsche payments were so high she couldn’t afford to go buy a $20 temporary replacement phone for the little bitch to use for one day.
But there are no cell phone carriers that have service everywhere. Driving across Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Kansas….there have been 5 hour stretches where I haven’t had ANY service. I realize that is because I’m in the middle of nowhere, and I don’t expect the cell phone companies to put towers where there aren’t any people. Common sense.
