Why is Apple Cider Vinegar so good for you?

Asked by ronski (742points) September 12th, 2009

Wow, it seems like the miracle cure for everything…why it that? I’ve heard it can help with weight loss, and has even cured liver cancer…

I can’t answer the actual question – why it’s good for you – but I just wanted to say that I can attest that it works for weight loss.

Facade's avatar

I don’t know why either, but I use it for everything

ronski's avatar

@Facade @DrasticDreamer What do you guys use it for? How did it help with weight loss?

Facade's avatar

Facial toner, hair conditioner, cleaning my piercings, mixing it in drinks for it’s many health benefits

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

It also works well, combined with baking soda, to clear clogged sink drains.

dpworkin's avatar

Yeah, but look what it did to the Challenger. You gotta be careful with that stuff.

DarkScribe's avatar

It’s great stuff. It did amazing things for me in bed, gave me a great neck massage and baked me a really fantastic beef and burgundy pie. (Or was that my wife? – it was definitely one of them.)

(Apple cider vinegar, while possibly having some minor health benefits, lives in the realm of urban myth.)

Here is a reasonably decent article debunking these ridiculous claims.

Ahh skeptics. The world wouldn’t be complete without them.

@pdworkin what does me asking a question on a forum where you ask questions have anything to do with ignorance MAN?

ronski's avatar

@pdworkin PS: I hope this isn’t how you treat your patients.

To lessen cold symptoms, especially coughs:

A tablespoon with half a glass of warm water (maybe a bit less) -> gargle three times.

Seriously works… kills germs.

I don’t know how or why it works for weight loss, but it does. I used to take 2 shots of it before I ate any meal, and I did lose weight, regardless of what skeptics may or may not choose to believe.

[http://www.fluther.com/users/DrasticDreamer/]I don’t know how or why it works for weight loss, but it does.

I can believe that, but only in that it will reduce appetite, not in any metabolic or pharmacological manner. Drinking a large glass of water before eating will also help reduce weight.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@DarkScribe Sounds perfectly sensible to me.

@pdworkin : Harsh, dude.

I have been told that it helps with digestion, nothing else. That seems plausible, and I like adding vinegar to most things anyway. That and/or lemon juice is a must in my cooking.

It does work great for removing lime deposits on the shower head and the tea pot.

It’s probably more nutritious than most of the food people eat nowadays, for the same reason that 0 is larger than a negative number. Anything that makes people eat less crap…

Never underestimate the power of the placebo effect.

I drink a little with diluted black cherry juice, honey, water and ice. It is delicious.

The miracle fix-everything is now 4000IU daily of vitamin D3. From muscle aches to halitosis.

A lady I work with drinks vinegar water all day. She carries a bottle of it with her and drinks it and even pours it in her coffee. She thinks it has all kinds of health benefits. I don’t know if it works or not, but I don’t think I could actually drink it. @DrasticDreamer How much did you drink before a meal? A shot…like a shot glass full?

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@knitfroggy 2 shot glasses full.

Because everyone needs a magic bullet.

Apple cider vinegar keeps me from having acid reflux. If you buy raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar (with the mother) it actually has health benefits. Once I got off the sugar habit, I found it refreshing diluted in hot water. I have a friend who likes it straight, but I had to caution him that too much of it straight will rot the teeth.
