Mmm, they are funny animals. I love ‘em. There are plenty out tip toeing in the bushes during the summer. Very full of fleas between their spikes though. Not sure how to bathe those needle cushions, they hibernate during winter and eat kind of nasty stuff. At least our hedgehogs. The swedish brand.

Depending where you live you may not be able to get one as a pet

Usually hedgehogs are not pets. They are wild animals and it’s best for them in most case to be out there in the wild. I recommend you consider a different animal.

Check out this site for information about keeping African Pygmy Hedgehogs as pets. They don’t interact with the pet owner much but they are entertaining to watch.

As exotics they are indeed illegal in some places, so check before laying out any money.

Also, my neighbor’s daughter had a hedgehog, and it turned out that I am ferociously allergic to it, so you might try “meeting” one first before attempting to take one home.

Get a guinea pig, same sort of size, cute, no spikes!

It all depends on where you live. You may not be allowed to keep one as a pet. If you can, I would suggest going to the library or an exotic pet store that carries them and do some reading first to make sure this is a pet that you want, a pet you can take care of and most importantly, a pet you have time for.

It really irritates me when people buy an animal that they think they can shove in a cage and as long as they keep the cage clean and food and water available think they can ignore the animal unless it suits them to bring it out as a showpiece. These people should be shot, IMHO.

Once doing a lot of reading up on a hedgehog and its care and you still think it is the pet for you, get one. I am not up on hedgehogs, but often general pet shop animals are to be avoided, get one from a person who breeds the animals. Good luck.
