How long are films usually shown at the theater?

Asked by poofandmook (17320points) September 14th, 2009

Especially if it’s a popular movie?

Yes, my boyfriend and I both love Twilight [hangs head]… and we want to see the movie together. He’s coming here December 28th, but New Moon is released November 20th. I don’t get to the movies much, so does anybody happen to know about how long it’ll be available, considering it will probably be a very popular ticket?

Don’t worry, it’ll probably still be in theaters by then
I think the more popular the movie is, the longer it stays. I could be wrong

Usually it’s a month and a half if the film doesn’t do too hot and there’s many other releases during the same time period (around here anyway). With as huge as the whole Twilight thing is you should definitely be fine though. I hope you two have a good time. :)

Until they stop being profitable for the cinema.

It will most likely be available, though Christmastime is a big movie release time. It really depends on how many second-run theaters there are in your area.

Just like @cwilbur said, depends on how much dough it continues to rake in and if theaters keep running it. But, personally, I would say New Moon will definitely be out past December 28th.

I remember there was a movie in Athens, Ga that was in the theater for less than a week. After that it went to the dollar theater. I can’t remember the name though.

New Moon should stay in theatres for a while. It’s a really popular title. (Harry Potter, similarly popular, is still in the “regular” theatres, and it was relased mid-July.)

I would check and see if there are any dollar theatres near you…or drive-ins.

Moviefone.com offers a search capability (click on “Showtimes/Tix” up near the top) that looks by zip code or city + state.

Dollar theatres are great because they’re cheap, while drive-ins are great because they’re usually inexpensive and always (?) show a double feature. (For instance, a theatre near me is showing Transformers 2 with GI Joe. They’re usually similar genre/age range movies.) Also, drive-ins are fun to do with your hunny…snuggle up and watch a movie together. ;)

Usually the theatre has a contract to show a film for a specific time. Call them and ask.

6 weeks is a good rule of thumb, but some last months, and some close after a week.

Most films now days are about two hours long… even at the theater

I enjoy films that are 100–120 minutes. :)
