What is the difference between an endothermic and an exothermic process?

Asked by sweetteaindahouse (2147points) September 14th, 2009

I need to be able to distinguish between an endothermic and exothermic process. I searched Google but that didn’t help so I figured I’d ask on here.

Are you talking about chem reactions?
Endothermic reactions absorb energy, exothermic reactions release energy.

Exo means outside, endo means inside. So just remember that exothermic means it gives something out and endothermic means it takes something in.

Also, I’m sure your teacher would love to explain this to you as well.

Hint: look at the latin roots of the word: endo = into, exo = out of, thermic = heat.

As always, homework questions are discouraged here.

As always: have you checked google, a dictionary, dictionary.com, or your book’s glossary?

Seems like a strange thing for a chemistry book to omit. Usually a teacher will teach you the things you are expected to know for your homework assignments.

sweetteaindahouse's avatar

@peyton_farquhar I know what the latin roots mean. I’m also sorry for posting a homework question.
@Allie Thanks for the answer. I’m not exactly sure if it is a chemical reaction or not but I’m guessing it is. That part is what confused me.

Boo! Homework. Who can help me with mine? What is the typical stoichiometric ratio of iodine to ozone in potassium iodide electrolytes used in ozonesondes? No takers? Bah!

Check your book glossary. That is standard stuff.

Ah, I see you have edited your question since I posted my answer. You’re saying you checked google, and NONE of those at least six pages about endothermic and exothermic reactions helped you at all? What exactly is do you need help with, then?

sweetteaindahouse's avatar

I have the answer now, so no need of anybody else answering this question.
@La chica gomela At the time I wasn’t sure if they were what I was looking for because the question asked for process no reactions.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

A reaction is a process. Again, dictionary.

@sweetteaindahouse, when you change a question after someone has answered it, it’s a good idea to include a note such as [ Edit ] to show that you have revised it. This is so you don’t leave your responders looking foolish after they have taken the time to answer.

I sense a little hostility in some answers.

endothermic reactions require constant input of energy to take place, exothermic reactions release energy while taking place.
endothermic reactions result in a colder system, while exothermic reactions heat it up.

@Allie I do too. Thanks for your answer again. I guess I won’t post any questions like this anymore seeing as how people don’t like them.
@La_chica_gomela you remind me of a friend I have. He treats everyone like they are stupid. People typically don’t like that kind of attitude.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@sweetteaindahouse: Sorry. I didn’t mean to make you feel stupid for not knowing the difference. Looking back in honestly, I probably did mean to make you feel that it was not appropriate to ask a question like this without doing the necessary research on you own beforehand, and that it annoyed me. Maybe I should have just said so. Again, sorry.

@La_chica_gomela Thanks for your apologies. Next time I will do more research.
