What are you listening to this very moment?
This has been done before with interesting results, so I thought I’d try it.
What are you listening to? If music, what particular song or album?
Or, perhaps you are listening to your boss, your mother, the jackhammer ripping up the asphalt outside your door, the traffic speeding by, birds chirping or perhaps even the voice or voices in your or @YARNLADY’s head?
For me, I’m listening to Sigur Ros, the () album.

the lights buzzing; the receptionists talking to patients on the phone and at the window, shuffling papers, making copies, and typing on their keyboards; people in the hall outside our office; the doors squeaking; the computer’s CPU grumbling; the hearing aid that I’m programming feeding back; and always the ringing in my ears.
I recently found these great recordings of the Brandenburg concerti by the Freiberg Baroque Orchestra on youtube. They use period instruments and are absolutely wonderful.
Here is an example.
Family Guy in the background, my wife is desperately searching for an episode she hasn’t already seen

@sccrowell What is your not-so-wonderful husband doing?
The raucus voices of the people in the travel group close by, making endless phone calls, half of them personal and all of them at announcement volume. The subdued ticking of keyboards among the quiet writers and editors in my cubicle neighborhood and the occasional churning of the printers and fax copier a few yards away. A low chorus of voices from behind the closed door of a nearby conference room. The steady thrum of the HVAC system.

@erichw1504….You have been apparently composing (or sleeping or on a different window) for nearly 45 minutes. The question is what are you listening to this very moment, the moment you read the question, not the entire afternoon. See ya….Gary/wtf
“Floor number 8. Going up.” And the gentle whirr of the elevator.
The sounds of the end of the day…Kids slamming their lockers, yelling at their friends. The squeal of tires as people pull out, way too fast, from the parking lot. Ladies and Gents, Ken Nordine.

listening to the jet fly over, the windows are rattling, and the car alarms are going off. I think that one was too close to the ground
I live in the Buckley influence area, about ¼ mile from the runway off base
@JLeslie I have always lived by one. Can’t sleep without the sounds of the planes and jets.
@brinibear: I have Air Force and Naval Air stations, plus one of the larger deployment bases right near me, plus we are near 2 major cities and a few smaller airports; so I understand how you feel. I remember how eerily quiet it was on 9/11, and was startled when 2 fighter jets zipped by.
@brinibear and @hearkat – We are next door to the only Naval base that also has both an Army base and a Coast Guard base on board, and which is the HQ for Naval Aviation Training. We hear planes and helicopters all the time.
The only real problem is when the Blue Angels come to visit and practice right near us. They love to fly low.
@hearkat I remember that on the 13th I was home alone, sick, and the sirens on the base were going off. There was an announcement, and apparently they scrambled all the A-10’s from Peterson, and Buckley, and I think a couple other bases, But the sound was so tremendous, I thought another world war began. I dragged my behind out of bed, and moved as fast as my body would let me, and went to the basement. I called my mom up crying.
I also live under the flight path of DIA (Denver International Airport) I live 15 miles from there.
@Darwin So I guess I can assume that you live in Cali, right? Love the Blue Angles, I’ve only seen them fly over out here, but I always see the Thunder Birds, just flying over. But I love being around the areas with planes. I have seen so many. I’ve see Air Force One from my bedroom window, I’ve seen Marine One and Two. I just love it. The only thing I don’t want to hear is one missing the runway. I catch all the sounds too.
But any ways, I am listening to The Reflex by Duran Duran
I Told You I Was Freaky by Flight of The Conchords

I have heard of killer albums before, but not quite like this.

I’m Watching Happy Feet.
Transatlantic – Stranger in Your Soul – Live in Europe
A mid-70s gospel/pre-disco song I remember hearing constantly as a kid by The Mighty Clouds of Joy called Mighty Cloud of Joy, natch.
They also did this song that every DJ worth his turntable should be sampling. It was a huge secular hit. Both have that tight “TSOP” sound.
At the time, they were going for a crossover market, much to the severe irritation of old black church ladies all over America. Hey, with genius songs like this one? Those old biddies could stuff it.
If I don’t make my own choice
If I don’t speak in my own voice
Who’s going to say all the things I’ve got to say?
A man’s got to make and ride his own mighty cloud of joy.
If you don’t get the jealousy off your back
If you don’t get the enemy off the track
Who’s going to run you down but YOU?
A man’s got to make and ride his own mighty cloud of joy.
Wandering Child from The Phantom of the Opera.
@RareDenver, er, what’s an “open hi-hit”? You don’t mean “hi-hat”, do you?
@aprilsimnel I have no idea what you are talking about, lol, seriously though thank you for spotting my typo
Oh. All righty, then! :)
“TSOP” means The Sound of Philadelphia, by the way. Philadelphia was a major center of American soul and disco music at the time.
@aprilsimnel lol silly me, I though you meant the TSOP noise an open hi-hat makes (when closing)
Radiohead – In Rainbows
See ya…..Gary/wtf
My son saying, “I need help!” [with his homework]....but he doesn’t really need help – just a swift kick in the pants.
The version francaise of “Up!” with my students.
Meat Katie – Long To Belong Sampler side one – Dirty South
The Fray – The Fray
I’m going to try to make it to one more concert…..I just bought 4th row from the stage tickets to see The Fray on the USC campus. The location, itself, brings difficulties, inasmuch as I am a UCLA alumnus. But, it is tempered a bit by the fact I did attend several continuing education courses at the Anderson School of Management at USC (of course only because they were sponsored by my then employer). This will be the third time seeing The Fray, a tight band with a ton of talent. See ya….Gary/wtf
PS: While typing, The Fray CD ended, so now it is Fuel – Sunburn
PSPS: @Tink1113…..Right on!!!

I hear the traffic going over the bridge a few blocks away as the window is open to air out my room.
@Leanne1986….I gave you lurve for Rod Stewart and even Carrie Underwood, but I’m sorry…...I have to draw the line at Barry Manilow (and Michael Bolton, for that matter). I would sooner give you lurve for listening to someone running their fingernails across a chalkboard. But, since you have otherwise shown a fair taste in music, your indiscretion will be overlooked, but can never receive lurve from me. See ya….Gary/wtf
The ticking of my wife’s biological clock.
@whatthefluther I admit that there are some artists that I am ashamed to say that I like but Barry Manilow is not one of them. I will never deny my love of Barry!
@Leanne1986….GA lurve for being passionate about your love for Manilow and not backing down. Granted, Manilow has talent (much more so than Bolton) but just doesn’t appeal to me a whole lot. If I recall, he had a number of television specials some time ago, and I will admit to seeing more than one of them, tho it was likely due to a scheduled guest performer and not because I longed to hear him sing Copacabana. See ya….Gary/wtf
@whatthefluther Just to be clear I am not a fan of Michael Bolton (although I probably can’t say I hate him either!) but I am a Jennifer Rush fan who I believe sings with him on the only song that I have of his on my iPod :)
I am currently listening to Subcity by Tracy Chapman.

Like You’ll Never See Me Again – Alicia Keys
My son, singing surprisingly cheerfully in his now clean room. The song is unidentifiable but sounds happy.
My son is rarely cheerful, his room is rarely clean, and usually he chants misogynistic raps that are full of nasty epithets.
I’m listening to and watching the Houston Texans throw the ball game away against the Indianapolis Colts…......and it’s discouraging.
Actually, I spoke too soon. I am now listening to my son destroy his recently cleaned room and all its contents, including his new video games, his new controller, his computer, and his Playstation. He is no longer singing but instead is offering up his full Anglo-Saxon vocabulary.
