If my Bermuda grass is already asleep for the winter can I harm it by putting a tarp on it?

Asked by JLeslie (65746points) September 16th, 2009

If I covered it during the summer, it would certainly die and I would have a big square of dirt left behind. But, if it is already dormant (is that the right word?) will it be unaffected if it is covered for several days?

Why would you? If there is an Indian summer, you could bake the roots. Are you planning on making a new flower bed?

No. I wanted to be able to set up a canope/tent thingy for a party and thought I might put a dance floor or tarp down of some sort. Didn’t want to kill the grass though. It might be down for a long weekend.

I think your grass will survive. Do it fast though..you might get frost and cold nights and have to pay for space heaters. I am turning off my outside water and hoses on Friday.

edit: I see you’re in Memphis. Still balmy there?

Yes, still warm. I was thinking about October though. We have fall through mid-November usually, drags on forever. I know that seems like it would be a good thing, but my leaves fall for something like 6 weeks. We are still all green here. I do think this will be a VERY cold winter, seeing that the summer was so mild. Where are you?

In what is charmingly called “the snow belt” or “the hill country of eastern NYS, next to MA border and the Berkshires. 12165.

We had nothing but rain. I got two pathetic tomatoes on my plants instead of the usual thousands, and the basil leaves were eaten by slugs.

Ugh. I have a few great pictures of my mom and aunt in the Berkshires when they were little.
