A system for doing this is often advertised on telly here. It looks intriguing and many claim to be growing not just tomatoes but all sorts of veggies in this fashion. Conserves water and eliminates weeding plus is good for those who grow on their balconies. Has anyone tried it and how did it work?

I gave one to my folks. They’ve successfully grown cherry tomatoes this summer (their first crop). They like it for the tomatoes and also because the grandkids like to pick them when they’re ripe. Generally, they put a potted plant underneath to catch the excess water.
you are just getting into the growing season you lucky dog. I will follow this thread dreaming about a better crop for next year.
It’s okay…I have two. But what the makers don’t tell ya’ is that plants WANT to grow “up” from the ground…so they’ll still try to do that in the topsy-turvy unless you have it in very direct south sunlight.
I plant all of my veggies/herbs/fruits in pots even though I have a large yard. Why? The weeding is lessened, the pots are easy to move if necessary, there are less bugs, and the pots are easy to water.
Plus, pots are cheaper than the turvy, and are easy to add feed to.
My grandma got one for Mother’s Day and all she has gotten has been about 6 cherry tomatoes. She was disappointed with it.
I got more tomatoes in the regular plot than I did with that thing
Thank you all for your answers. I have seen on http://www.instructables.com/ suggestions on how to make your own so I might give it a try. I too plant in pots, well buckets actually, the 98cent plastic variety. Works pretty well.
@jonsblond – I don’t want to make you overly jealous but where I live, it is growing season year round! Actually when you go outside during the wet, it is not safe to stand still in one place for too long because some sort of vegetation will engulf you in no time. Makes kudzu look like a slow poke!
We have one and it takes a little while to grow, but it worth the wait in the end!!
