How do I manually rewire a phone jack to use the main line number?

Asked by steveprutz (180points) September 19th, 2009

I am about to disconnect a second residential telephone line in my house. To avoid a technician fee, I want to attempt to just re-route these phone jacks to use the main line number.

I have opened up the wall jack and compared it with the main line… they are exactly wired the same—4 wires (black, red, green, yellow).

Is there a simple way to do this? Credible how-to web links are appreciated!

There should be a box on the outside of the house where the line from the outside comes in.

I made a sloppy video showing you what to look for. here

It should be pretty obvious once you get in that box.

Edit :: My sister is going to kill me if she sees that I used one of her good butter knives.

@johnpowell GA, and I loved the Jewish Screwdriver! My dad never had any “real” tools. I always used a butter knife for flat head screws.

@johnpowell I forgot to mention the box outside, which I checked out/opened earlier. There’s TWO phone units, and they are differently wired. Only problem is I don’t know what to do inside the box.

Can you post a picture of what the inside of the box looks like?

Hmmm. Telephones only use two wires. On mine it is white and blue. It looks like it is red and green on yours.

Here is what I would do. You can always undo if it doesn’t work. The lines I marked in blue look like the input for the second line. Leave those alone.

The ones in orange (looks like two reds and two greens) Need to be moved down to their corresponding terminals that I marked in gray.

Are two phones on the second line?

Edit :: I think that I am wrong. I would move all three of each color down to the first block labeled 1.

@johnpowell I have 3 phone jacks hooked up to use the second phone number.

@johnpowell…The outputs look like modular jacks. If so, can’t he just put a splitter on the main one and run both jacks off it? See ya….Gary/wtf

It looks like you have one number with one phone, and another number with 2.
If you are trying to keep the 2 number phone, move the wires from the top to the bottom.
If you aren’t sure which is the number you want to keep, plug your phone into the modular jack.

@johnpowell Your directions worked like a charm. I moved the rest of the Red & Green down to #1 and all are now primary phone jacks.
