Would these be lame Halloween "treats"?

Asked by Supacase (14573points) September 20th, 2009

I bought two boxes of Halloween foam sticker crafts (similar, not the exact ones) for a party next month. The people planning the party have now decided they don’t need them.

I can return them, but I was wondering if giving each trick-or-treater a kit to make one would be a nice change from the mounds of candy (right, the kids just hate too much candy) or if it would make me “that house.” You know, like the one that gives out toothbrushes and sugar-free gum. I don’t need my yard TP’d.

They’re cute. However, I did notice the “choking hazzard” warning, so it may not be the best thing to hand out to young children.

I would have loved receiving something like that back in my trick-or-treating days. If you decide you don’t want to hand them out you can just mail them to me. :)

It sounds like a good idea to me. Would it be worth it though? Do the kits cost a significant amount of more money than candy would?

Putting myself in the shoes of a trick-or-treater, I’d have to say I’d be a bit disappointed to get those. Not as disappointed as I would be by an apple or a toothbrush, since at least those stickers are in halloween spirit. But it’s something I’d have no real interest in, I’d just have stuck in one of our boxes of halloween decorations.

I am going to buy garlic and coat them in chocolate. Then when the kids ring..hehehehe.

I would totally give those out. Since it appears you only have 2 dozen kits, maybe you could put them in a big bowl with candy and let each child choose what they want to take.

Depends on the age of the kid, I suppose. Kids old enough to shave (yeah, we get those here too) would think they’re lame, but younger kids would like ‘em.

@ragingloli use chocolate coated cherry tomatoes instead, the squirt factor will make it all worth it when they come back to egg your house and car.

The minute Hallowe’en is over, themed decorations and toys go stale. I’m sorry, this is just my opinion, but I would think they’d be the most fun leading up to the holiday and not the day after.

Right up there with the orange and black candy. What are those any way?

I was going to say the same thing as @augustlan.

My daughter would love to get that on Halloween. My mom always has a tub of foam letters and bookmarks or bigger pieces of foam for the kids to make things. I have about a zillion bookmarks that Grace has made me. She would think that was way better than another Snickers bar.

From my experiences with 3rd and 4th graders I would estimate that the girls would love them and most of the boys would consider them lame unless they have an artsy side they don’t mind expressing. Younger age groups would most likely find them interesting.

The suggestion to give them a choice is the best one as I’m quite sure that enough kids would choose them to make it worth your while.

It’s not as if these are universally regarded as lame. I think they are kind of cool and I’m sure there will be enough kids who think so too and parents will love them for sure. You’ll get positive feedback I’m sure.

i heard in texas you can legally shoot anyone who enters your property without your permission.

MrBr00ks's avatar

hmm, id return them while i could and get fall or even winter themed crafts, things that would look cool left up for a while.

I’d say yes, aside from chocking hazards.

but it would beat a toothbrush

Depends on the age, most children between the ages of 3 and 10 would like it, but any younger, and it’s straight into the garbage, and over that, you might get your house egged.

I think they are fab and even if it too late for this year, they may get stored and used the following year. I would have a choice in a bowl, sweets and stickers or stick a sticker on a sweet??

Was going to say it’s a bit early to be thinking about Halloween, but went shopping the otehr day and already they are starting with the Christmas stuff!!

CMaz's avatar

All Halloween treats are lame.
That is the allure of it. Digging through the bag of stuff and seeing the goofy things you have gotten.
I say go for it! Sounds unique.
Last year we had the kids ask for cans of soup. Just for the fun of it.
It was a challenge for them.
You would be surprised how many people ponied up.

Thanks, everyone! I actually have 48 kits, which is more than enough for the amount of kids we will get. I think I will make the kits and add some candy to them as well. I always have safety pops for the really young ones, anyway.

I think that’s a great idea, and I agree with @augustlan to give the kids a choice. Last year I had a bowl of candy, and put little halloween pencils and note pads beside the bowl for kids to choose. They actually went over really well! I see what @Jeruba is saying about them being such a novelty. I guess it depends on when your neighborhood’s trick or treat night is. If it’s a few days before Halloween, then they’ll have time to enjoy them. Candy wouldn’t last much longer probably.

Though, I did learn one lesson last year: Don’t turn your back for one second or some 16 year old with a back pack will wipe your ass out.

I love the idea! I would have preferred those to candy when my kids were younger!

i think it’s awesome. i still trick or treat, and i’m onea those rotten teenagers. [;
but i love them. haha

rangerr's avatar

It depends on the kid, really.. Most parents don’t care if their kids have too much candy, but some parents DO care and appreciate there being an option of something else.
Especially with it being a craft, it’s something productive. @Jeruba said that Halloween themed things are out of place the day after, but the kids can still make the craft, and put it in the box to hang up for next year.

So, what did you end up doing and how did it work out?
