I like Macs and all…but $1,000 for 4GB of RAM is highway robbery. You can get 8GB of RAM for a fraction of that. So why does Apple charge such a high price for it?

What?
On the Mac site, I see $1,200 for 8gb for all of the Macbook Pros, and $200 for 4gb for both of the 13” ones.
Where are you seeing $1,000 for 4gb?
Now, regarding the general question of “Why are Mac things so expensive?”: Two reasons.
1) Because they can
2) Profit
The folks at Apple aren’t retarded (much to my dismay). They know the best way to get the most net profit.
Higher or lower prices would lead to an unsatisfactory profit for them in the end.
It is two 4Gig chips. Those are a lot more expensive.
The machines with 4 Gigs use two 2Gig chips. Those are super cheap.

Because Apple sells computers to two different types of people.
1) People who can afford it and will pay it for the convenience of not having to install it.
2) People who will find it as cheap as they can and install it themselves.
@johnpowell Okay, I understand that, but I can buy 2×4GB chips for half the price of Apple’s upgrade.
Apple’s RAM is notoriously overpriced—but then again, so is Best Buy’s. Customers pay for the convenience—Apple gets paid for the labor (and a healthy profit margin). It’s not rocket science.
@andrew Yeah I suppose it really is that simple. I wanted to at least ask before assuming Apple is just overpricing without a legitimate reason.
Apple has always charged premium rates for their memory. If it bothers you, buy the RAM separately and install it yourself.
@cwilbur Oh, I’m not bothered by it. I was just curious and think it’s a little silly.
But Apple memory is bathed in a kryptonite mixture and blessed individually by Steve-O before they are installed. That should be worth at least an extra hundred.
Because people who aren’t tech savvy are willing to pay for it and/or honestly don’t know any better in the same way some people will pay $40 for an oil change when it takes 15 minutes and maybe half that cost in materials.
Apple is not the only one that does this. All computer makers who sell direct to consumers do this too, Dell has a pretty high markup as well.
