What would the world be like today had Germany and Austria-Hungary won WWI?

Asked by doggywuv (1041points) September 22nd, 2009

What would be the great powers of today? What kinds of governments and economies would operate in these powers? Would wars occur after this hypothetical WWI victory (especially WWII)?

Impossible to say. The second world war would not have occurred the way it did. Soviet Russia probably would not have developed as it did either, and so Soviet-led communism would not have been as it was, which probably would have had a large effect on China. Nazism probably would not have emerged or taken over in Germany the way it did. Israel probably would not have been formed, and the Middle East would have wound up differently. I don’t know what would have happened with Japan and European imperialism around the world. Perhaps Japan was likely to still go imperialistic and invade China and SE Asia the way it did, but who knows what allies it would have had and so if it would have taken on the United States. It’s really difficult to say, and would probably have been a lot different in terms of which countries were doing what.

that’s like going, “I’m thinking of a number between 0 and 217 billion, including decimals, you only get one guess…”

I would think the US would still have stayed intact, though defeated and running home with our tails between our legs.

Having the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans to insulate us from the aggressors from abroad.

I firmly believe the middle east would be a lot more stable because the Brits would probably out of the picture. The wandering tribes that became the Oil Sheiks that became the Saud et all would have been exterminated. Who takes the oil is questionable. Russia would have had a Czar a lot longer. That would certainly change the Asian dynamic. This would make a pretty good video game to work out the permutations. This is too big for my brain right now. I’ll be back on my meds tomorrow. These are about the best things I can think of as most likely.

Building on @majorrich ‘s statement: Hitler built his empire on the defeat of Germany in WWI, so you wouldn’t have had the murder of 6 million Jews, and you wouldn’t have the backlash at the end of WWII which created Israel. Now you have a calmer Arab world, and no Jewish homeland in the middle of it.
I am not saying that is better, just that it would be very different.

Well I probably wouldn’t be here…

I don’t think any of us would be. We lived this set of circumstances. In the other we are discussing, our parents would likely never have met, nor theirs. We are contemplating a completely Video game reality.

A popular question and it has been asked before here on Fluther. My opinion: the rest of the world would have defeated Nazism 10 years later. Evil empires never last too long.

@ragingloli – Thanks. I didn’t notice. Well, I guess Germans would have been sick of having Kaiser Wilhelm II eventually. Maybe the Weimar Republic would have started 10 years later.
