What is your fool proof method for getting rid of hiccups?

Mine is not working, I need help. I get this often, and it becomes painful. I can usually get rid of them by drinking a glass of water upside down, or by holding my breath while swallowing, but right now nothing is working and it is becoming very uncomfortable.

This always works instantly for me:
Take spoonful of sugar and try to swallow it quickly before it dissolves.
You’ll find several answers in this question where we discussed it previously. Good luck getting rid of them!
Nothing works all the time, but Harp‘s sugar method has been used by me effectively. Drinking lots of tiny sips of water in a row is another one that sometimes works. I try to will myself to not have them by controlling my breathing and my esophagus (I was trying to think of how to explain what I do, it’s very difficult to convey), which also works part of the time.
My friend told me to do this (I’m sure she just made it up to make me look silly but i don’t mind cause it works) I cover my ears and have someone help me drink a cup of water (I dont know why I dont hold the water and they dont cover my ears) but I think it’s the sheer ridiculousness and absurdity of the act that causes me to laugh and that either offsets the hiccups, makes me forget about them till their gone, or nearly drowns me. So it might not work on anyone else but me.
My husband tells me to hold one arm in the air. It only seems to work if he tells me to do it, not if I do it on my own. Shall I have him call you?
@SeventhSense no, agggh! After trying many, many methods, they just randomly went away at about 6 am. It is now about 10am, I just woke up and I have them again. I am going to try every method conceivable to get rid of them again, hopefully get a little more sleep. Wish me luck.
Always works, unless you have hiccups that are truly a medical problem that have been going on for hours (this can be treated usually with medication).
Here you go: Take a deep breath and fill your lungs/chest, not your stomach. Keep your chest out, but you can breath shallowly (your stomach might move a little that is ok). Hold this position for a minute and it should work. This basically gives your muscles and organs the position of holding your breath without sufficating or releasing too early which usually leads to letting your chest come back down to take a breath.
I don’t know if there are any fool proof methods. I just ride them out. They don’t really bother me. It’s a bit fun sometimes actually.
I haven’t tried this trick, but my kids look forward to doing this when they get em’.
Take drinks of water from a cup upside down. This is accomplished by bending at the waist forward (your torso will be parallel to the floor) and tilting your head down so that the top of your head is facing the floor. Now take a drink – if you can.
@JLeslie Thank you, I think that did it.
I am sitting very still, waiting to see if they come back…
Thanks for your advice everyone:)
Yay! I have never read my method anywhere, I can’t figure out why others haven’t figured it out? Let’s see if they stay away :).
It always takes me a few tries to hold my breath “hard” enough. Like, if I just hold it regularly, they never go away. I have to hold it and push out my stomach and sometimes I feel like I’m going to pass out. Well, it’s not that bad, but it does work. I hate the hiccups, I get them often and they become painful.
@deni, read my answer 5 posts above, I think it will help you.
@JLeslie You are always on top of things!
@deni don’t know about that, but thank you. :).

That must suck. I’ve never had them for that long. Here’s something to cheer you up. The longest case on record…..drum roll please….
As per the Guinness Book of World Records Charles Osborne had the hiccups for 68 years, from 1922 to 1990, and was entered in the Guinness World Records as the man with the Longest Attack of Hiccups. Records estimates he had over 430 million spasms. He died 1 year after his hiccups stopped.
Nice life huh? Doctors have yet to find a cause for hiccups. It’s caused by an involuntary contraction of the diaphragm.
Breathing like this calm my trachea works like a charm for me.
jump on the can and read something
Just in case it comes back-
it’s not cute but Burping.
I drink soda & have a set of small shallow burps- I think it flattens the diaphragm. Sometimes I have to do it a few times in a row, but it always works for me.
Sit upright, breathe well and concentrate. Always works for me, within a minute.
When you hear someone having the hic’s, say something that will upset this person. I have been doing it to people and it has a success rate of 99,99999’ % !!
