I am looking for advice on moving to Maine (just for the summer), finding roommates and a job.

Asked by erica (1points) September 23rd, 2009

I am looking to move to Maine in the summer. I’m 23 and a graduate student from Chicago. I want to see a different part of the U.S. and live there. Be a little spontaneous and have some adventure. Looking to find a summer job at a restaurant and find some cool roommates for a 3 month lease. Any advice? Location? Jobs? How to find roommates? Resources?

Make a post on the Craigslist for that area. Put it under the rooms/shared portion of the housing category. Say what you said above…people will contact you.

I live in maine! And this summer I’m actually looking for an apartment as well while I’m home from school. My advice would be to stick to touristy parts if you want to have fun/make money. Freeport, Bar harbor, and Portland might be some good places to start. Stick towards southern Maine and do NOT go north of Bangor (unless you want to die of boredom). Even though Augusta is the capital it isn’t really where you want to be (this is where I worked last summer at a chain restaurant and didn’t make much money). Like @deni said start with craigslist. Also the major newspapers (the ones I know are the portland hearald or the Lewiston sunjournal which is for the Lewiston/Auburn area. This is also highly populated but a slightly….’‘dirtier’’ area).

My suggestion for the best experience would be either those touristy areas orr one of the many small towns that Maine has. There’s millions of typical new england towns with main streets and hometown diners and lots interesting people (not the best for the party scene though).

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for the advice! I will definitely look into Bar Harbor and Portland. I’m just nervous about finding a place to stay and roommates. I’m gonna save up now, while still at my full-time job, so whether I find a job there or not won’t be a big deal. Thanks for the advice…craigslist is a good idea for sure!

If you want to waitress, you could try the Jordan Pond House in Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island. It’s a large tea room and seems to employ lots of staff every summer. I think they provide housing for workers since they are in the park. It’s an absolutely gorgeous part of the state; we go there every summer.

I found a place/roommate on roommates.com. I highly recommend this site.
