What could be causing my gums to be sensitive to brushing?

Asked by melanie81 (794points) September 23rd, 2009

My gums have recently become very sensitive over a couple of my teeth (upper right side)...I’m afraid to say, I think it’s an infection. I especially notice it when I brush my teeth, though they don’t bother me all that much during the day or when I eat….they hurt only a little, and they’re a little itchy (which I notice when flossing). Anyone know what could be wrong?

Start using synsodyne toothpaste. It will fix it right up.

It could also be gum disease. You should probably see your dentist.

Definitely sounds like something your dentist should look at. Are you using a “soft” toothbrush? Anything else can irritate your gums.

Could it be because you play the flute?

It could be because your tooth brush is too hard, or because you smoke, or because you have plaque. Regular washing with a sensitive toothpaste such as Sensodyne and a treatment with chlorhexidine mouthwash that your dentist will advise you how to use should fix the problem.

Maybe that’s it….I’ve used a medium toothbrush for as long as I can remember. Never given me problems before, but you never know…

I wonder if there’s something wrong with this particular tube of Aquafresh I’m using? I’ve also used this kind for years, never had a problem, but the sensitivity did start when I opened this new tube. Odd that it would only occur over a few teeth, though.

Last night I noticed that there was a small cut above one of those teeth…that could explain it, IF the cut happened first. however, if the cut is a product of something wrong, then I need to get to a dentist ASAP!! Will book an appt. for next week.

better make it for tomorrow, if it is an infection as you said it could cause quite a lot of damage if you leave it and take much longer to heal. Even hours count.
