2 scenarios:
1st:we can feel physical pain but no mental pain
2nd:we can feel mental pain but no physical pain
how would our life change in these 2 situations? Will it better, worst, boring? How would the relations between people would change?

we would go extinct. Plain and simple.

It would be much worse. Life would be bland – no seasoning, nothing to look forward to, nothing to fear, nothing to regret.

There’d be nothing to tell you something is going wrong, nothing to warn you away from dangerous situations. It’d bring up a whole host of problems.

I read this article some weeks ago, about a girl, Gabby, who has HSAN type 5, a condition where you don’t feel physical pain.
This link directs you to that (Dutch) article where you can see that the girl is wearing swimming-goggles, because if her eyes weren’t protected she would (and already did, hence she now has an artificial left eye) poke her own eyes out.
She eats her finger(tips), she chews on her tongue as if it was a gum.
When she bumps into something she isn’t warned to stay off it in the future (think heating, pointy things) simply because she doesn’t feel pain.
The article states that at the moment of writing Gabby wears a helmet and knee- and elbow-protectors.
Persons with this HSAN condition rarely get to adulthood without beins severly harmed.
Luckily she does feel the sensation of being hugged and petted.
I feel for the girl (really no pun intended).

To answer your question: i think the world would be hell (-ish).

No pain no gain.

Situation 1. We’d lose control of how to interact with each other, there would be no excitement or joy without pain. The world would quickly devolve into a state of chaos or monotony, our abilities to feel as humans taken away.

Situation 2. We wouldn’t know our physical limits and capabilities, every day would be a nightmare trying to figure out what is okay and what will damage us. We would eventually go extinct.

@rebbel Great article, hope you don’t mind, but I took the liberty of translating a small rancid part of the article:

In one of his books, Paul Brands describes the story of another girl called Tanya, who just like Gabby can’t feel pain. Tanya’s mother walked in on her little daughter while she was painting. She wasn’t using any crayons though, as it turned out she bit the tip of her finger to use it as a red marker. Tanya’s father left the family, in his opinion they created a monster.

I smell a Hollywood horror movie based on Tanya’s and Gabby’s story.

@markyy: God that’s awful! I think the natural progression of this question is “What would happen if these could suddenly feel pain?” If you think about it, we all probably feel some kind of pain all the time without realizing it because we’re used to it. What would happen if these little girls started feeling pain? How could they handle things like being hungry or thirsty? Being on their feet after a long day? Sitting in the same position for too long? these things are no bid deal to us and we just kind of walk them off but for someone who has never felt pain before…

Well, the statement. “Pain in the ass.” Would hold no relevancy.

@rebbel I saw a documentary about a young man with that disease and it was heartbreaking… this child would pull his own teeth out and play with them.

Pain is an important part of our existence… as @XOIIO said so very succinctly, we’d go extinct.

Many more of us would die of unnecessary injuries.

We would try frantically to develop systems to tell us when we should be in pain, basically all die out or end up like cyborgs

CMaz's avatar

Yes, I like the idea of cyborgs.

Without physical pain, we lose our empathy. Without mental pain, we lose our empathy.

Either way spells death for mankind.

Without pain, half of the human race (the 2 out of 4 personality types with predatory values) would then destroy all life on Earth.

Clair Bennet (Hayden Pannetierre) would give anything to be able to feel pain. I think watching HEROES gave me an understanding of how painful it would be to not be able to feel pain.

A world without pain would be like an automobile without warning lights or gauges. The instrument panel tell us that we are out of gas, something is wrong with the battery, the engine is about ready to give out, the wiper fluid is empty, or the right side blinker isn’t working. Imagine driving through New York City proper without an instrument panel and you have a glimpse of what life would be like without pain.

Without pain there would really be no consequence for any action. There would be no reason to workout, manage stress, wait for one’s soulmate, avoid cigarettes, avoid endless orgies without protection, etc.

Most of the world would die of infection, because pain alerts us to injuries that we need to disinfect and treat.

anesthesiologist’s would be out of the job. Paxil would be pointless.

Pain develops character, and leverages inner growth. Pain offers resistance that develops maturity, as in electronics, how resistance develops voltage.

Personally I like pain. I recognize its importance in my development. I recognize it usefulness in training my children.
