Is there a good integrated virus-and-spyware scanner available for Windows XP for free?

Go to www.avast.com and download their free home version. It is a very comprehensive security suite. It is free for private use, not for commercial, but it works on an honour system. Strangely they pop up a question about the number of commercial flights you have made, more than six in one year and you must pay for the software.

I regard it as better than most commercial offerings.

I generally don’t use anti-virus software, but I’ve used AVG a couple of times and it seems to be simple and efficient.

There is no difference between the versions – I use both the free one and the commercial one on different computers.

AVG is fine for me. It’s free and has spyware removal in addition to virus removal.

It can be updated freely on the net.

Only disadvantage is it takes lot of time to scan whole computer.

I don’t think there are any comprehensive single solutions. You are probably much better off with the combination you use now. In extensive testing all anti-virus and anti-malware programs overlapped somewhat on detection. You need the duplication.

Also, I believe OneCare is being discontinued because it has been commercially unsuccessful.

I’ve always been a big personal fan of Symantec’s products. Not sure where all the hate on them comes from. I sell Kaspersky, McAfee, and Trend Micro though. They’re all very popular. Is it for personal use or an enterprise? Nothing for free that I’m a big fan of tho.

In todays worlds on the net one product is not going to do the trick because of all of the different virus, spyware, malware, rootkits, etc so the best plan of action is a combination.
I work on systems and this is also what I run myself.
AVG 9.0 – this one can be set to scan, update and delete all by itself
Spybot S&D- same here
Malwarebytes – this one if you run it a couple times a month your go to go as long as its update each time you run it
all are free
Then I like to run this one called Glary Utilities and it can’t be to often – its a registry repair plus more.

I recommend you check them out as the one that comes with XP does not always do the best job.

Another little great tool for you is go to Google or Yahoo: One of the best pieces of FREE software there is today that will show you what is on your computer is known as: Belarc once it is downloaded you simply run and time you wish to see what is installed on your PC, from OS to Model, hardware, software, hot fix’s and the Keys to software on PC. This makes it a valuable program in that you can run it every so often and print off and save for you keys if for no other reason.

Note:
It is wise to only run one virus program at a one time but run as many spyware as you like, only run them one at a time, other wise they will conflict with each other, it is good to have more than one as each will find some thing the other did not. Uninstall any other program as they may conflict such as Norton, McAfee etc.

The only one on this list that runs in safemode F8 is AVG anti-spyware, which does work great in safemode.
Also wise thing to do is to run the virus & spyware program once without internet connection and then again with internet, as some times the virus will try to block program other wise when internet is running.

Personally, I think that you already have a good setup, especially with Avira as your AV. Sure, your setup is not all-in-one, but if I need a knife, a saw, and a USB drive, I would rather have a Santoku, a Sawzall, and a SanDisk Cruzer than a Swiss Army knife. The Swiss Army knife may be able to do everything by itself but not as well, and until Leatherman puts Craftman out of business, I will stand by my position.
