How can I make my own J2Os (fruit juice drink)?

Asked by Ame_Evil (3051points) September 24th, 2009

For those of you lot who aren’t British (unluckily :P) or have never heard of them, J2Os are fruit juice drinks made with 50% fruit juice. I quite like them, but they are too expensive to buy on my student budget. I was wondering if there was any way to make them with just fruit (in the same percentages) and a blender or if there was more to making fruit juice drinks than I thought.

Just for reference (and your help) the ingredients of my favourite J2O (orange and passionfruit) is:

Water, Fruit Juices from Concentrate (Orange Juice 35%, Passionfruit Juice 5%), Sugar, Stabiliser (Pectin), Citric Acid, Flavourings, Colour (Anthocyanins), Preservative (Potassium Sorbate), Antioixidant (Ascorbic Acid).

Thanks for the help.

Wouldn’t watered down 100% fruit juice concentrate be the cheapest option on a student budget?

Why would you want 50% of fruit juice when you can have 110%? Blend some fruits and add water. It isn’t rocket science, buddy.

@SpatzieLover I guess as I used to do it, but I prefer just having squash rather than that. Maybe I will return someday. Also watered down concentrated juice tastes nothing like J2O :p.

@PretentiousArtist Because 110% is an unreal number unless if it includes the dregs of the processed oranges :p.

/edit I notice that I said 50% fruit juice but the ingredients says 40%, fail on my behalf.

@Ame_Evil Then if you really like the taste of this J20, splurge on it as a treat once and awhile. Otherwise, make up a pitcher of juice from concentrate.

The drink you want would probably be easiest to re-create if you took half a glass of the concentrate juice and added water and a packet of juice mix like Crystal Light or Kool-Aid (do you have those over the pond?) to get the taste you’re looking for.

Are these fizzy drinks? I looked them up on the web & see they’re packaged in soda bottles.

@PretentiousArtist: I don’t know about where Ame Evil lives, but I know here, fruit is pretty expensive. Ame could stretch the fruit usage if he watered down fruit juice. Plus, some people don’t like such a full flavor in their drinks. Watering it down lightens the punch of the fruit.

@poofandmook Yes, I was thinking @Ame_Evil might otherwise add a bit of soda to the juice to create a concoction close to this J20 drink, which would also be cost effective.

@SpatzieLover: I’ve added diet Sprite to fruit juice before… it’s amazing.

@poofandmook I don’t drink, so when we go out I usually have OJ, white soda & a splash of cranberry juice bled over the top…It’s a delicious “treat” as I rarely have soda.

Mix fruit juice with seltzer (carbonated) water or club soda in 50–50 proportions. Sorted! In the US, seltzer is in the soda aisle at the market, but it’s much, much cheaper (and on a lower shelf). Just check the sodium levels in the water.

Buy high juice cordial rather than cheap stuff, you don’t need as much in your glass for a really juicy drink. Fresh orange and passion fruit mixed with lemonade is great too.
Have fun xx
