It’s subjective. A lot would say Becker, other Borg, McEnroe or Federer, or Agassi, or a bunch I probably forgot. There were different ones that were good at different times in history. Like William Renshaw in the early days. Pete Sampras was really brilliant. As far as trophies go, Federer (the current top seed) really is as good as they get.
Cool, just wondering what other people thought.
oh and some might even say Navratilova ;)
For my money, I think Pete Sampras in his prime could beat any other player in their prime. Well, maybe not on clay.
Federer and Aggassi are the only ones who have won all 4 slams on the current 4 different surfaces. And Federer has won them all (except the French) more than once. I think that is phenomenal and that record will probably stand for a long time. I really liked Pete and he is up there too, but if you go by the record books, Roger has it in the bag.
Plus he makes the phrase “poetry in motion” come alive. I have never seen anyone including Pete move around the court as gracefully and effortlessly as Roger.
I am. O. Wait. I’m not a male. And I don’t play tennis very much. Nevermind!
The best of all time was Arthur Ashe. If he would not have had his career cut short by health problems, they would still be chasing his records.
@WestRiverrat – he had the heart attack in 79 and that is what stopped him from playing but he was 36 at that time. I realize that he didn’t have the opportunity to play as much as say a Sampras, Federer, Nadal or Djokovich but at 36 his remaining time was limited even if he had remained healthy. Why do you think he was the best?
