When is a Jelly no longer considered "new"?

Asked by patg7590 (4608points) September 25th, 2009

There is often talk about “new” Jellies, when is someone no longer considered a “new” Jelly? Is it based on how long you’ve been here? Lurve? Some combination? I’ve seen Jellies with more lurve than I introducing themselves as new…. maybe i’m just a slowpoke…

I figure anyone with under 150 lurve is new.

Once they show they’re an active community member, not someone who pops in irregularly or rarely contributes. It doesn’t hinge off their lurve score.

I’d go by lengh rather than lurve, I don’t have a lot of lurve but I’ve logged in almost every day since I’ve joined.

Wouldn’t a counter for how many days in row we have logged in be cool? Could put it on our profiles to see how active someone is.

@Dog I was about to welcome someone the other day who had lurve around 150 and when I looked at their profile I noticed they have been here since 2007. I was so glad I checked the profile!

I think if someone spends at least 3 months answering questions and getting to know everyone, they aren’t considered new anymore. but that’s just my opinion

I’d go by:
– Length (how long they’ve been here/whether they just appear intermittently)
– Quality (once they start giving good answers) and
– Quantity (once they start giving said good-quality answers on a regular basis).

Lurve scores usually just correlate with those three factors and are usually a useful indicator. But as @jonsblond has pointed out, sometimes they’re unreliable.

I’ve climbed the lurve ladder pretty quick I think and I still consider myself new. I see quite a few people who are definitely regulars and I’m starting to kind of know them. I know if you go to my profile it says created July 25th, but that was on my iPhone and I was just checking things out. I actually started participating I think a few weeks ago. Aside from having a new PS3 that I can’t get my mind off of Fluther is one of the first sites I check when I’m online. ;)

Is it just me, or do we have a bit of situational irony there, @cwilbur?

@Saturated_Brain where did that really good answer you had posted go…about being an impersonal business front… I was going to link to it for a question that just went up but I can’t find it.

In some communities, you’re always new if you weren’t born there. Others consider you a part of the community after you are, well, a part of the community.

I guess that means when you’ve answered a few questions, established relationships with a few people, and know your way around. I figure that people with less than 400 or 500 lurve are relatively new, no matter how long they’ve been members. I’m not on the Welcome Wagon committee, so I usually don’t add the “welcome to fluther” comments unless I am directly addressing the person.

Of course, people keep on turning up who are new to me, and they already have a couple thousand lurve. The place is getting bigger—big enough that there can be people who run in completely different circles.

@Saturated_Brain: Unless you are sure that I have a sense of humor, it’s safer to assume that I don’t.

@everyone

am I considered new?

you are at 779. So you are NEW.
784 is old.

So here you go. High 5!

Saturated_Brain's avatar

@cwilbur Oh I’m sure you do. Or else you probably wouldn’t be here. =P

i’m inclined to agree with @Saturated_Brain but only to a point. Stats only go so far in determining participation.. sure you contribute, but are you really a part of the community? A lot of jellies answer on a regular basis, mostly quality answers… some not so much, but don’t make as much of an effort to interact as others who may post less. A big part of Fluther is the community aspect. Many friendships have been formed on this site, some through the chat feature, others through interaction on threads… all based on common ground that has come to light during the discussion of any given topic.

So i agree that a “seasoned” jellie might post often and with a certain degree of quality.. but until said jelly has adopts a community mentality and embraces the true personal nature of the site… i would still think of them as a noob.

@astrochuck Schlepping mail is better than shtupping mail!

I give lurve to anyone I see under 50. I figure they are a newbie if they are under 200, or been here less than a month.
