No, it is not possible to become a professional driver in your free time unless you have a surplus income.
I come from a racing family. Cars, engines, fire suits, helmets, shoes, tools all cost lots of money.
Auto racing “schools” are not really out there for people that want to be pros, there created by pros to allow race fans some fun & insight.
BTW~ If you want a foot in to the behind the scenes of racing and are mechanically inclined, start by hanging out at your local sprint, midget or stock car track and ask a team if you can assist them in the pits.
It’s hard work, and you’ll go home dirty, but you’ll gain some insight into the process.
i wonder why people think they could become the next michael schumacher by doing racing as a hobby on weekends…
it’s just not going to happen.
if you want some fun, come to germany, rent a track day car and do some laps on the nürburgring.
@ragingloli Droooool. the nürburgring that would be awesome. I agree with the rest of them. Starting a racing career is expensive and takes a lot of work. I’m a musician and it’s the same, but I have to work. If I just dropped all and went for it, I wouldn’t make it very far. I don’t have many supporters and also a lack of band members, but nonetheless… If it was an available option, I would drop everything in a heartbeat to be able to do what I love for a living. Even if it was barely making it by.
Look where it got Hulk Hogans kid.
If you’re young the best way is to start kart racing. The vast majority of Formula 1 drivers got their start this way. Once you prove yourself in karting you can move up to higher powered racing cars. Of course I’m sure there’s other ways for things like rally racing.
