How can I get a paperclip out of my keyboard?

Asked by tinyfaery (44249points) September 25th, 2009

I’ve tried to wedge it out with numerous objects. I’ve tried shaking it out. I’ve tried to blow it out using one those cans of compressed air. Nothing has worked.

This is my work keyboard so I can’t do anything that can potentially damage it.

Any ideas?

It’s sooo annoying.

The compressed air is the way to go.
I have access to an air compressor which is the better way to go than canned air. (Less waste)
Sometimes it just takes some patience but if you’re persistent, you’ll get out any paperclips, food or other debris that found its way in there.

pop the keys off that are blocking it and get in there with tweezers

Be careful if you use an air compressor. Many of them blow out a bit of oil as well as air when you use them.

Press ‘Eject’.

I wonder if you type paperclip and then hit the ‘escape’ key, if that might work.

try a strong magnet

Will a magnet ruin my keyboard? Where can I get a magnet?

Can’t you look up how to take the keys off?

tinyfaery's avatar

How nice you think I’m capable of such things. I tend to break stuff, and like I said, I cannot damage it.

A magnet will only harm IC’s and computer monitors. Don’t put the magnet by the 3 green indicator lights and you’ll avoid the only possible damage, and even then you’d need an incredibly strong magnet, one that exceeds your needs.

Offer it something it just can’t resist

Use your tongue piercing.

The paperclip is under the ‘S’ key?

tinyfaery's avatar

I don’t have a tongue piercing.

Could you use the hose attachment on your vacuum with the smallest nozzle attachment & suck it out?

tinyfaery's avatar

That could work.

SpatzieLover's avatar

I’ve dropped weird stuff in mine in the past, and the vacuum has come through for me. Hope it works @tinyfaery

Do you have IT support? I had to swallow my chagrin and call tech support when I spilled cranapple juice in my keyboard. It sure made a nasty soup of all the Doritos crumbs that were down there. I don’t park beverages next to my keyboard any more (or munch Doritos). At least a paper clip would have been clean.

I work in a small law firm. Tech support is the most tech savvy employee. And I already asked him.

How about another paperclip, bent open? If you fashion it into a hook it could work.

patg7590's avatar

@tinyfaery if all else fails, you can buy a new keyboard rather cheaply. (around $15 dollars)

@Jeruba After spilling a hot cup of coffee in my keyboard I have to agree with you, liquids and keyboards do not a happy marriage make.

Vacuum worked! Thank you @SpatzieLover.
